New Orleans Special, Id, to New , York Herald. ' ' That the majority of Southern boys wbo offer themselves for enlistment In the United Htstes army are found 1e be physically unfit and are rejected U the startling statement which had Ita origin In th New Orleans re cruiting station thla morning. Lieutenant William K. Bennett, who la In charge of the local recruiting - office, says that last month lot men offered themselves for enlistment, and out of that number only 20 were ac cepted. A large per cent of these men were naturally, from th South, ; but this city. . being cosmopolitan, there were also many men from other parts of the country. Many of the men were rejected be reus their hearts and lungs had been affected to such an extent that they were unfit for servlc In th army. Other men had lived In th city, and their mode of life militated agalnsti them in various ways and so they wer not accepted. However, - the Southern boy was tarred In a Urge number of cases, not because of trouble with his heart, but becauA of not being up to the requir ed helahl, and more often for not - weighing enough. Lieutenant Ben nett said that lark of weight more ofiea kn?t Southern boya out of the army than anything else, and he at 'trlbuted their light weight to the ef fects of climate her. ' Th requirement for enlistment are '' that a man ahall weight not less than ' III pounds and that h shall not measure less than I feet 4 inches. Oftentimes a man Is a bit under ; weight, but If he Is healthy he Is en ' listed by apeclal orders. Robert Mul , len, who was only t feet 1 ,1-2 Inches In height and weighed only 120 . pounds, waa enlisted hare last month , by special permission of the War Ue , j-srunent, a he promised' to make a 1 good soldier. Lieutenant Bennett says that the country boy show up much better then the elty boya la regard to the desire of the men In this, section of ; th country lo enlist, the lieutenant vs that th percent. Is as good here a anywhere elset but, as every. nher else, the country boy doe not come forward for' en enlistment as rten as the city boy, for many of the men who enlist are the ones wander ing around the country, and more eopecislly Is this so ; with regard to s- men.. 1 . ; c ..
