Superatltlona Cornlnliman Dlgginc for ' '' thw Burled Owld. London Chronicle. : J ! Superstitious beliefs still .linger Iri tha remote villages of Cornwall, and tha tenacity with which many of tha Cornish folk cling to them la striking ly Illustrated by a remarkable atory of a search for hidden treasure, which cornea from Wendron. Nearly half a century ago an, old iaoy named Varker lived in a cot tage at Lower Bodily, In th parish or wendron. whwlch. had th reputa tlOn of being; haunted by ghosts. On night ah declared that two. pixies nad paid iter a visit and told her that vast treasure waa hidden beneath .the cottage. ' With tha reputation which th humble dwelling had for being haunted, the atory was received with considerable credence in th district. It made such an Impression on hef two sons that they Immediately com menced to excavate for th treasure. Taking- up the floor of ona of . the rooma, they sank a . shaft to V th depth of several fathoms. . Water In vaded the shaft and pumpa and other appliances were erected for draining and hauling. Th prematura death of on of the brothers led to the abandonment of th operations with out any treasure being discovered. Now, after the lapse of forty year, th search for the suDDOaed hidden treasure, has been resumed by W. II. Varker, a rraldent of Ooldalthney, and grandson of th old lady who held communication with th pixies. In the Interval the cottage haa been demolished, but Mr. Varker has located the alte, and with the help of another man from tha neighborhood, Ig engaged In sinking a shaft, The excavations already extend to a depth of 2 4 feet, of which 17 feet Is vertical and tha remainder on an incline. Pumps and machinery are In course of erection and th ex p hirer Is sanguine of success.
