Of course they hsd their fine engines, their long ladders, fitted with all the latrat patent devices, and their trained horeea, which coat thouaanda of dollars. Where he spend hundreds they spend thousands and their equip ment la far superior to our own. "Hut for quickness of action and method of work, the two things which count at a fire, I believe that the Charlotte fire department can stand shoulder to shoulder with any of them. We are woefully In need of additional equipment hut even with what we have I would put up our department against almost any of the better paid and better equipped de partments of the North." With thl Col. Smith went off Into a long recital of what the Charlotte department might to have. "It ahnntd have." said he, "a lighter chemical engine for the long run. The one on hand I too heavy, especially when calls come from the suburb. More hoee. la needed and lighter trucks. More Importsnt still, there should be three suh-atatlona for looking after all the suburban fires. The present denartment In the resr of the rlty hsll should he kept for the fire lim it.
