' Special to The Observer. Salisbury, Jan. 5. A big blaxe In South Salisbury, the most flre-llke thing seen In duyn, drew all of the population out hint night and It did look ominous for a moment. The barn of Mr. John Barrlnger caught from an unknown cause and was burned merely to the ground before the llremen could reach It. But they did good service In preventing u spread, for the fire burned- fiercely and caught several buildings near by. All of the stock In the barn was saved, Mr. Barrlnger suffering only the loss of the structure, which amounted to several hundred dollars. Mr. A. B. Saleeby has returned from Petersburg. Va., where he went last week to investigate the killing ot Ms cousin, Joseph Saleeby. When the message of the homicide was re ceived, here, Mr. Saleeby did not know anything about It and Inquiry proved It to be a bad affair. It oc curred at Dcndron, Va., where Joseph Saleeby. as traveling salesman, was attacked In daylight, by four negroes, one of whom struck him on the back nf the head and killed him with a blackjack. This negro escaped. The crowd then ransacked his clothes, but found only a smail amount of money. They missed $100 in another pocket There were several witnesses to the affair. Three . of the negroes were caught and are in Jail. One of the negroes had Saleeby's purse when found. - The dead maft has been here often and was well known. He left a wife and several children. The Grimes Drug Store has had a curiosity In the shape of a red fox caught In a long chase Saturday morning in Davidson county. Mr. H. Clay Orubb Invited a party from Salisbury and other friends Wednes day night and Thursday morning about 4 o'clock they started out with 18 hounds. Striking a trail at half past 4, they ran thered rascal five and a half hours, capturing him final ly in the ground. The fox was taken out without Injury and when exhibit ed In the drug store' was entirely alive. The Salisbury admirers of the sport of fox hunting and Mr. H. E. C. Bryant, of The Charlotte Observer, christened him Red Buck. James A. Hudson, the county's most unique clthten, tells this morning of the largest hog he has seen In 50 years. It belongs to H. W. Barrier, a Franklin township farmer, and In Its stocking feet weighs 1,000 pounds. The porker will be butchered within a few days and It is expected to dress more than any animal killed In Row an within the past quarter century. The hog Is mora than three feet In diameter and measured, from snout to tall, Is In excess of eight 'feet In length. For nearly two weeks those of the citizens who are connected with the houses through which the millions of pounds of tl.e golden weed of the farrrr ers of this section are disposed of. have been free to do their own will nnd pro vide for themselves amusement and pleasure as they will. The buyers have had a much-needed rest and the tobacco market has practically been at a stand still. The recreation was well earned, for never In so short a space of tifno and o expeditiously, has such a quantity of tobacco been disposed of on the local market aa la the months preceding Chrlitmas. Time and . time again were the sales blocked while the streets In the warehouse section were crowded with wagons of farmers for many block. Clerks have been worked night and day to dispose of tbe enormous quantity ot the weed, and buyers were required to follow they tales from early morn to al most sunst. Messrs.
