The board of trade here made, public -to. night a letter received- from State resolutions recently adopted by the" board In regard to ranroaan. in ma letter Senator Buxton aaya: . ". ,i "I am somewhat surprised to And that your board does not think the ' fare are too hlfh on the railroads of North' Carolina. Though -1 thor oughly agree with them that the transportation facllltlea are Inade quate and In many place unsafe, there aeema to be no satisfactory reason why rat .should not be aomewhat reduced knd' transport tion, facilities rendered more ade quate as' well as safe. I am not an extremist on the subj.ct of lowering the passenger rates, but I recall the fact that the Democratic ptatform calls for the reduction of these rates and that on evsry stump In my can vass. 1 promised to vots for a moder ate reduction of rates and I heard no dissenting voice from any member of the board of trade at that tim?. I think 2 1-2 cents a conservative rate and a fair rat and shall vote for this. In fact the railroads would be wles to agree to this rate without any further discussion." President F. J. I.llpf.Tt, of the board of trade. In his reply, to Sena tor Buxton's letter says: "The board of trade fully understood your prom ises to th people of the county In . reference to the reduction of passen ger transportation and certainly did not mean to -mbarrnH you by the. re solutions forwarded you with a re quest that you present thed to the Ken ate. The point was fully discussed and, knowing your pledge to the peo nlp rilfl not ask vou to support ouf views,' but only asked the prlvl- lege through you or gelling our resolutions before the Kenale. In the same you were certainly accorded the proper respect, along with th other two Representatives from this coun ty." OITTLAT BY ROADS NKfESSAItY. "The resolutions In question wre the result of considerable thought on th part of the hoard of directors of the board of trade and were con sidered by the largest attendance of Its membtrsi have had the pleasure of recording since my election. And, if you will note, the main point made by the board of trade was Improv ed facilities, for butter transporta tion. The manufacturers of our community are to-day stiffi-rlng on account of the Inability to deliver their product. It Is the most seri ous question that has fared them In years and unless there Is some rem dy at an early date It will mean a financial loss to thrm hardly to be estimated. With this brought hourly to their attention, they feel that It Is highly Important that there be a marked Improvement In tho freight and pas senger service. They recognize that to make this Improvement means a large expenditure by the railroads, and feel that they ehould not be placed In a position to confront the railroad commission and the shipper with the excuse that the reduction In their revenues had em bars used them to the extent of their not being able to meet the outlay necessary to handlo the Increased volume of bus iness. I believe you will recognise the good sense in the position taken and again assure you that the resolutions were passnd with due respect to you and the other representative from Korsyth county." l.-iino hsi. -rent, which Is tliouf ht to have sola freely on the ln.it decline and whose buying gave the trade en couragement as to the correctness of their bullimt view.
