Cowles, of WUkesboro, and nephew of Col. H. C. Cowles, of Statesvllle, Is now In charge of the Fifth Infantry, United States Army, stationed at Cardenas, Cuba. Capt. Douglas Settle, son of the late Judge Settle, of North Carolina, Is captain In Col. Cowles' command and has been appointed adjutant by his colonel. Zeb. B. Vance, a son of the late Senator Vance, who was a cap tain in the army, has recently been promoted to major and assigned to the Fifth Infantry. It Is quite a coinci dence that the colonel, adjutant and major of this regiment are all North Carolinians, and It Is a further coinci dence that the adjutant and tha ma jor are sons of two distinguished North Carolinians who were opposing candidates for Governor more than SO years ago. The North Carolinians make good soldiers and It Is a matter of pride that the Fifth Infantry Is In charge of these young Tar Heel om cers. Mr. Bakataume, a Japanese student of Boston, Mass., who 1b In this coun try preparing himself for missionary work In his native land, is in tne county delivering lectures. He will lecture at West End Methodist cnurcn to-morrow evening on 'The Life of the Japanese and the Christian Re Ilon." Mr. J. H.
