The rainfall during the first, 11 days of the year was only' 0.81.. of an Incto, : and the mean temperature .50. Some Idea of - the , significance' of these figures- may be obtained when it Is stated that the -, average rainfall for January for the .last 1 years was 4.10 inches, and , , the ; average mean temperature 41 i' degrees. ' The rainfall has then been one-eighth of the normal and mo temperature 9 degrees above Uu ' T 't This unprecedented state of tnlngs has not been local. Only this week there have come newspa per reports of heavy snows In the California desert the like of whlrh e traditional oldest inhabitants falls to recall, lieal w inter weather was not re-ported In the South until after the middle of January. Until the present week there was little or no snow In the winter-wheat region. In this respect resembling January a year ago. Perhaps the most notable reports are. however, tnose which In dicate that Orwi! Pritaln and the continent of Europe -have had a mnre than ordinarily severe winter.
