Several years ego a band of counterfeiters operated here and a large amount r of the spurious ooln was In circulation. A detective of Uncle Sam was sent for and after staying here several days not only located the counterfeiters but the den and some of the tools used In coining the queer. Two of the parties were- convicted and ; serve time and since that time none of the . unlawful money has been discovered so far as. known.: !::'- This week 'several - silver dollars and coins of smaller value have been taken' la by cltlsens here and It is believed that 'r another band of counterfeiters are at work here or In close proximity. - As was true la the ..case In the former counterfeit money It showed the earmarks of the queer, but not so with the dollars turned loose here recently. One examined by your correspondent has the weight and appearance -of the real wheel with Uncle flam's stamp, it being clear' out and in every way a good counterfeit The only5 serious draw back Is In the ring. Babbitt metal is supposed to be the material used In making them. The dollar in circu lation bear the date of 1870 and one -that was examined closely had scars earrled In the pocket and helps to make It more like the genuine. The 'merchants have been notified to look out and put the officers on to It If they take In any of the queer. In the meantime they are on the lookout to ' see If there is any foundation for a ..probable counterfeiting of the spuri ous coin In High Point V REAL ESTATE DEALS. ., An Important real estate deal was made here yesterday, when a lot on the Charles property was bought by ' Mr. - It L.
