Han ft, of Washington 'Duke Lodge, extended a cordial wel come to the visitors in an address which was replete with good reason ing and was a magnificent argument, showing what the order of Knights of PytJnlas Is and what It stands for throughout the world. The address of welcome was responded to by the grand chancellor of North Carolina, Mr. W. W. Wilson, of Central Lodge No. J, of RaleLgh. N. Grand Chan nellor Wilson la himself thoroughly imbued with the spirit of PythlanUm and he delivered an address such as It la not often the privilege of any audience to hear. His exposition of the cardinal principles of the order, friendship, charity and benevolence, was complete, while his illustrations and the application of them were striking in their appropriateness. At the conclusion of the public ex ercises a secret aesslon was held In the lodge room after which the members of the local lodge invited the visitors to a supper, which had been prepared under the supervision of Miss Carrie Herndon, who Is proprietress of tho Duke Hotel. In Boston the Humane Society is doing some effective .work in aid of the much abused horse. The society has prepared a tag to be attached to the harness of a neglected or mis treated animal found anywtaere on tin streets.. The tag sets forth ' the following admonition; "Please be kind to your horse. In winter blanket your horse when he stands. Shoe your horse with ; " calks ' when the streets are slippery. Feed him - at meal time and water him, and never let him stand out In stormy,, disagree able nights.!';'? People Wao persist In Ignoring the reasonable requests lay themselves Jlablo to arrest and prose cutlon, W believe that tags bearing the same kind . of Inscription . could appropriately be r: fastend to the, equipment of horses In more than on section of the country,' Specific In stances of cruelty and neglect of man's faithful friend are not hard to find no matter where one may be located. What ft pjty that horses should receive: such scant considera tion for 't'ne excellent service they render to mankind. Mr. Editor, has Charlotte a Hu mane 8oclsty? -If not one like the above Is very much needed. There are dally many Instances of cruelty manifested toward our noblest of animals- the horse. Many ere tor tured by having their heads put In to an uncomfortable, unnatural posi tion by the check line and the double bit, another discomfort. They are at the-mercy of many heartless colored drivers. Could th owners of horses or mules witness the cruelty shown them In various ways, they would be more careful w.nom they employ to drive and care for them. Let us have a society that will fine or punish all offenders that are unkind, cruel and abusive to man's most fatthfut friend the 'norse. MRS. C. A. AME8. Charlotte, Feb. 9.
