Master Zob Caldwell, the young son ot ; Mr. and MrsR. V. Caldwell, of the county, who was accidentally ahot yesterday afternoon at Poplar Tent, died this morning at 1:30 o'clock, and the re main were laid to feat at the family burying ground at - Poplar Tent churchyard this afternoon at 3 o'clock.. The shocking tragedy has thrown the entire community Into mourning and sorrow to-day on ac count of the prominence of the young people and the sad ending of a happy day. It all came about In this way: Zeb Caldwell l the son of Mr. and Mrs. Victor Caldwell, and a brother Of Dr. Morris Caldwell, and lives at the old Stanhope Caldwell place, "n the Poplar Tent road, four mlli:.s wrst of this city. Zeb was a student at the Concord High School, under the care of his uncle, Mr. Williamson Morris. He went to his home FrMay after noon for tho week-end holidays, hut before going he hnvlted several of his schoolmates to his country home n tho following day, which was yester day. The Invitation was anepted by Misses Lucy Iirown. Sudle Smith and Mac Parks, and Master James Walt hall, all about 16 or 17 years of an The party, after arriving ut the home of their host, derided to g' to Hir.z;irl mountain, a knoll on which cluster a number of largo rock, found only In this entire section on the r.ocky Itldge of Cabarrus county, a target ihuot lng was their principal feature of sport, and after a practice on terra, firms, tha young people mounted some large rock. James Lee Walthall loaded one of the rifles and laid It oarWally down, slating to some one of the crowd that ho would go over on another rock una place a target About the time be ascended th rock OS the opposite side. he. heard little Miss Mace Parks say, "Throw up your j hands. Zeb. I'm going to shoot you," 041 d to saying tho shell exploded, the J ball entering the boy s head In t ti i centre of ths forehead and penetral- I log the bralo He fell backward off the rook, whlth Is probably 15 feet to j the ground, In a very pn irlous nn- i dltion. Th young pi-opln were ! dumbfounded and horrified at the ter- 1 rlble accident, and medical aid w,i j not available under an hour. Dr. D. G Caldwell was lirst ailed In and later T)r. Morrison Kinjr, but their efforts were of no avail tho . boy dying at the hour mentioned. I Miss Parks was not awnrf tr-ut the 1 rifle wan loaderi and the sad occur- i renre Is pathetic. Indeed, whe.i it in j realized that the happy duv spent upon J the famous roeks of west Cabarnn i -nded In so tragic ft manner. The young girl Is the daughter t Mr. j Uaxter Parks, of this ' iv. and Is now ' proitrnl with grief r,, r the affair. : Zeb was her playmate, h-r sch". and rlarjmhtc. Columbia, 8. C, March t. ., The cases against Daniel Zimmer man and T. J, Gibson, which ware before the Court of General Sessions this week, have attracted much Inter est throuKhout the State, and tha con dition of tho two defendants, once ap parently allies In crime and now at enmity before the bar of Justice, have elicited wide sympathy. Zimmerman, It will be recalled, plead puilty to the charge In the Indlctement as to the conspiracy to commit forgery, and ut tering a fofged Instrument, while Gib son denied the charge of receiving stolen Koods, knowing them to"" be stolen. In the trial of Gibson Zimmer man was used as a State's witneni and detailed on the stand the alleged conspiracy between Gibson and him self to steal from the State and place on the market tho bonds of the State that Bhould have been cancelled bv Zimmerman In his capacity of bond clerk. Last night before Judge Prince, be fore Zimmerman nUiod up to receive unnteni ," rim- of his attorneys. Senator Francis H. Weston, made an eloquent plea for his client, begging tne e.mn in h merciful In Imposing sentence In view of the fact that Zimmerman had lived a correct life 60 years, that he had .served the State 4 years in war, that he had evidenced repent ance and contrition for his sins, Mr. Weston, who Is himself a warden of St. Johns Episcopal church In the lower part of the county, referred to tho fact that the head ftho church of which Zimmerman an well as Mr. Andrew Crawford, Gibson's attorney, were members, had advised ai.d coun elled Zimmerman to toll the 'nit.h. the reference being to liifhop Capers, (vhoe advice Zimmerman had receiv edas a corn munlcant and as a neigh bor "f the bishop. .Senator Weston's allusion to Zim merman's church mcmberehlp renew ed comment upon a feature of th trial of ;il)son, which at tho time elicited no little talk. Gibson was un doubtedly convicted on the testlmonj of his nnlesscd accomidh e. lun!el Zimmerman, and as stated by Gib son's attorney in the motion for a new trial, the law says that the tes timony of a confessed accomplice must be ie r ived with caution by tho Jury, though the Judge neglected to charge this point. However, as stated, the jury evidently believed Zimmerman i:nd did not believe Gibson H Is a Tail that Zimmerman was and Is 4 communicant of thu Good Shepherd nnd has been a prominent member of that congregation. Cpon the jury whl h tried Gibson and convicted him 4,n Zimmerman's testimony wore tw o flic -i s of the church to whh h Zim merman belongs, Mr. C. O. Hrown being warden and Mr .1. H.
