"He told me the glrl'a name," said Mrs. Thaw, "but I can't remember just when this wus. He told me she had lived In Pittsburg or Allegheny, and that she had gone to New York with her mother, where, aa we all know, she posed for artists. He Bald nh had been persuaded to go on the stage, which was very bad for her." Harry returned to Pittsburg, she said, in November 1904. "Did he speak to you again about the young girl?" asked Mr. Delmaa. "Thero had been a horrible scan dal," said Mrs. Thaw, "or at least they made it out a scandal. J -remember my expressing my disappro val of his coming home In the same ship with the girl. He explained It nil to me. He waa still of a mind to marry her." "You have said nothing before about his wanting to marry her," In terrupted Mr. Delmaa "I must have Orgotten It." replied Mrs. Thuw, "he told me In November 1903, that he wanted to marry her, but that he had been frustrated." Mr. Jerome) Insisted that Mrs. Thaw give the entire conversation with her son as far as she recalled it. "After meeting the young woman," she resumed, "wb returned to the hotel and Harry asked me If I had any objection to his marrying her. 1 told him It was not necessary for me to glvu my consent. He said he did not want to do anything against my wishes. "I then said I was perfectly willing. I did aflerwurds make one condition not to prevent the marriage but I told Harry If he married the girl and came to my house to live her past life muct bo a closed book that it must never be referred to I mean her ,iast life, in New York." "When Harry came home for the wedding he seemed to be laboring under a great stress and feared that the wedding would le Interfered with by the young woman's mother on ac count of the girl's mtnorltx" "Hut he obtained tho mother's con sent, didn't he?" Interrupted Mr. Del mas. "Yes." JKItOMK FOLLOWS DELMAS. Immediately after the recess of 15 minutes Mr. Delmas announced that his direct examination of Mrs Thaw wus concluded and Mr. Jerome at onco begun; his cross-examination. Several ijuestlnns put by Mr. Jerome regarding th defendant's condition were objected to by Mr. Delmas and were Mi.stalned.
