New York, March . The cotton market wan ratner nervous and Ir regular to-day with trading a little loss active. The clone wag steady In tone, but at a net decline of 3 a point. Sales for the day were estl- mated at 150,000 bales, The , market opened steady at an advance oi l i I points in response .to rather better cables than expected and shortly after the call was about t to 6 points net higher on the active months as a result of bull support and , covering;. But offerings became In creasingly heavy during the early ses sion With Wall Street bulls free sell ers presumably owing to the unsettled stock market. There was also some ' ing tne circulation of some additional March notices and prices soon eased off to a net decline of about 1 a 4 points. This was followed by a period of irregularity during the middle km slon, when the bull leader seemed to be supporting the market on soft spots, but later prices eased off to H9 for May owing to the continued large reeelpts and the failure of fresh buying for long account to material ise. The close was within a point of the lowest for the session on the ac tive months. Southern spot markets were unchanged to l-8c higher. The estimates for to-morrow's receipts were full, but the Into Bight for the w ek was a little undr expectations and while exports for the day were light. It is said that export engage ments for the month of March are ery heavy and that the. large port receipts reflect this demand. There was no special feature In the weather news. Receipts at the ports to-day were 33,283 bales, against 22,082 last weei. and 12,522 last year. For the week (estimated), 170,000 bales, against 187,781 last week and 105,434 last year. To-day's receipts at New Or leans 8.177 bale?. against 2,783 lat , year, and at Houston 8,682 balen, against 4,165 last year. FURTHER DRASTIC LIQUIDATION. Periods of Extreme Weakness In Prices of Blwks When a Ixmer Level Mas Hcachtxl Than in Many Years Past. New York, March 8. There was further drastic liquidation in the stock market to-day and periods of extreme weakness during which prices plunged downward to a level in many cases lower than for several years past. At the same time there, was evidence from time to time of an ab sorption of stocks of a kind to Indi cate that prices have fallen to a level where some demand Is attracted of an Investment or semi-Investment character. Ilirre nan been more or less bargain buying In small lots all through the week' decline, as such as taking out the market to hold for an Investment return Hut buying at tracted by the Investment return, but of a marginal character, has been slower of development. There him been a notable lack also of buying by banking and other large financial In terests, for the purpoHi-s of support Up to (o-day. The opening break in prices to-rlay did develop buying of this kind, and the pr.-ceptlnn of It was a prime factor in turning the bears to cover and effecting the fol lowing material recovery rally The bears proved In the later market that they had not exhausted their ammu nition This did not prevent a growth of tne opinion, however, that the period of active liquidation was approac hing Its term Sentiment was much less easy to-day, even during the early break than for some lime past and the confidence was more general than the liquidation would run Its course without disaster or pnnlc. Yesterday's weak closing paved the Way for the flood ,,f selling orders Under which toe marset was swamp ed at the opening The persistent absorption of Heading and the sup port of It was ,i f,n (or in keeping the bears uneasy and In Inducing the ex tensive covering movement of the day. Outnlde hoM'-rs of cotton have been diking their proms on nil strong moments, their sales up pun-ntly going Into the hands of the hulls-who have given support both here In Liverpool when It was needed. Traders feel that little new Interest has neon brought into the market, but that the short Interest has been laralv eliminut ed during the past week. We doubt if they are quite as bullish In their views, as they fear the depression In the stock market may bring about a check to the demand for cotton goods and that any cessation of the industrial prosperity might brlngv with It the cancellation of orders for ; goods. On the other hand, they recognise the' danger of reins; short of the end of a large crop and of the cotton goods trade. The Insight move ment was 16.000 bales leas than the cur rent estimate, due to loss in stock front the Interior towns. : " HUBBARD BROS, A CO. The Money Market. 1 New York.
