CiIAIILOT, I- 1 r (! I r j i co:i:jei:ce and finance t;:k cotton markitt nervous A Rrcitk of More Than Ten Points In Hie larly Session Allowed by a . Rally to Nearly the Closing Price of the Previoiu Day Tho Opening Barely (Steady at a Decline. New York, March 13.-The cotton mar fcet u quite) nervous and Irregular during today's trading, but a break of a little over 10 point during the early aes Ion wm followed by a rally to nearly theclostng prices of the previous day during the late afternoon and the mar ket oToaed steady at a net decline of only ' i to I points. Sale were atlmatd at 176, 409 bale. The opening wai barely steady at a decline of at to 7 points In response to selling by- some of yesterday's buyers, , who were disappointed that (he English market did net make a better showing ' on the national glnnera' report and a ; renewal of bear pressure. Prices soon Increased their loss to a matter of 8 to 13 points on the active positions under these offering; and the bears seemed more aggressive than at any time since : the beginning "Of the reactionary ten dency owing to the rimers that the lead ing bull interests had liquidated the bulk of their holding of futures. Around 9.73 for May and V.81 for July the market Was steadied by covering of shorts, but chewed no rallying power of conse quence until late In the day when there was a renewal of bull support and prices reached the best point of the session. There was selling by the local bears at the advance and last prices were a lit tle off from the best, although the un dertone of the market continued steady. Attention during the flay was turned mostly to the rumors regarding the at titude of market leaders. Southern spot . markets were unchanged to Vfco. lower; receipts continued full and no exports were reported. . . . Receipts at the ports to-day 41.136 bale against 36,675 last week and 23,425 last year. For the week (estimated) 160,000 bale, against 175,443 last week and 117, 2 last year. To-day's receipt at New Orleans 7,W4 bale against 10.020 last year, and at Houston ll,8& bales against .761 last year, A RECOVERY IN STOCKS. Pressure of Indiscriminate Soiling Relieved Somewhat -Tho Buying Demand Which Followed the Recov ery Fitful Effect of tho Roosevelt Morgan Interview. New York, March 12. The stock mar til was notably- free still to-day from the voluminous and Indiscriminate sell ing which hod so demoralizing an effert on speculative sentiment up to the end of last week. Freed from pressure of this damaging kind there was some ex tension of the recovery which was In force yesterday. The uying demand which affected this recovery whs fltgful and apparently hesitating, falling at times to very meairre proportion and alternating with some renewal of sell ing. The selling, however. was at the higher levels and was not pursued on the declines. The Incident of the day's news on which mot stress ws laid from the market standpoint was the In terview at Washington between Presi dent Roosevelt and J. Plerpont Morgan. Mr. Morgan's appearance In the avowed role of a mediator to bring about an understanding and co-operation between the railroads and the national govern ment wss accorded Important ls;nitt cance. The purpose of the proposed ron ference between the President and rail road eaecetlves a to what tep might be taken to allay the public anxiety a to the relations between the r.nlroals and the government Is admittedly of far reaching consequence to the stock mar ket The action of th market to-day seemed to reflect a feelina of hopeful ness that some food would I Jult frrnn the move towards common under'tiind Ing. The ground of the hopeful ferllng seem to le that c-o-operatlon between the rsllroads snd the national govern ment to secure the rndu sought ny government may servr to iiil.iv the (Vicwl of measures now pouring Into Btate legislatures all ovrr the country for restraint upon railroad powers anil which are feared eiecUlly for their va riety snd ciiifiictliiK requirement The ub-Trrnsury at New York hat taken from the Imnks since the last tank statement $3.41.00", which Is more than enough to wIk out the surplus re seives of the banks a It stood on Satur day There are large deposits being made at the iib-Treaiiry for redemption f bank notes; but custom collections Hre also running very lienvy The money situation was railed re sponsible for the Hunt ileinitnd. which re' strlcted the movement of prices, In spl'" of the subsidence of the selling The day extreme advances were not nil held, hut the clolng tone was fairly steady. New York, March 12. Liverpool liav lug secured a large supply of cotton, and the Kngllsh spinners also holding large stccka, the market there shows a weak er tone, closing easy at &,whnrp decline. Hero the market though at one time, sharply lower on liquidation, changed quickly under local support, as the mar ket waa too low compared with Ldver tool sentiment. While less bullish than of late, it Is almost impossible that any material decline can occur, despite the large movement of ' tne crop, jr we could have a falling off In the receipts, the feeling here would become very bullish, but there are fw Indications of a decrease of more, than the usual pro- rortlone. Estimate are current that close to i2.ooo.ooo pnies win appear in sight by April 1. Liverpool should re cover at least points ot tne aecuns there to-day In answer to the steadiness of our market.
