Smith Goes to Take Chargfl of a .Washington If OSptUj. , , ; . : Special to The Observer. Salisbury, March 24. "Thli build Ing will be the center from which the innuences of . this association will ra diate In Spencer, and with It It plea. : ant accommodations for rest and rec reatlon, I am aura that It will attract a constantly growing membership and that It U destined to ba an important factor In moulding the character of the men of the town, the Interests of whom, as President of the Southern Hallway, I have so much at heart." . ' These were the worda of President Finley last night at he formally open ed the T. M. jC. A. of Spencer. With him came to-day In a private car. President Spencer's special, Vice-President H. B. Spencer, Qeneral Coun sel, Alfred P. Thorn, Capt M. V. Rich ards, Southern Land and Industrial agent, C. J, Hicks, of New York and , H. O. Williams, of Richmond. From S o'clock In the afternoon, to 5, an Informal reception was held, the la dies of spencer and Salisbury figuring largely In the meeting. Short speech es were made by several of the party and a general inspection of the hand- . some structure, the magnificent phil anthropy of the Southern Railway, took up a portion of the afternoon. All of the big road men took a fall out of ten pins and the amusements af forded the members of the association. President Flnley joining in the sport. The building has every convenience known to modern lighting and sewer age purchasable with money. The bent water obtainable anywhere flows from an artesian well and nowhere along the Southern's lines. Is there a nedlflce comparable to this one when the size of the town in which It Is situated, Is taken Into account. MUTUAL INTERESTS. Mr. Flnley's entire address was along the lines of mutual Interest of ' employer and employed and the com munity of concern among all people through whose bounds the roads run. "A modern railway," he continued, "is a great bualness Institution which can only succeed If conducted on busi ness principles and If every official and employee devotes his energy to assuring Its success. . . . The funda mental idea that I wish to Impress up on you, is that there Is a complete Identity of Interests between the Southern Railway Company and its employees. The highest success of the company as a business Institution and the utmost development of Its abil ity to perform the functions as a com mon carrier, require each individual and employee to serve it as efficiently as possible. "The company owes ea,ch employee foil recompense for his services in ac cordance with the terms of employ ment and every employee having ac cepted the employment of the com pany. "As every employee has the vital In terest of in the success of the road, he must appreciate the Importance, not only to the railway company, but to himself, of the devotion of all his energies to a thorough understanding of the duties and the proper perform ance of them, whatever they be. The duties of the flagmen at the street crossing sre Jut as Important In his sphere, as those of the president In his. The effitclency of the road de pends entirely upon the efficiency ef the Individuals. In every depart ment there must be what I call team work. NO BARRIERS RAISED. "There are no Insurmountable bar riers between the employers In any de partment and the highest offllces In the service of the company. In this employment, a man's Individual char acter and recrd are what count, and ability, reliability, and devotion to duty, will win recognition sooner or later. The future of a railroad man In any department of the service, la In his own hands. I want all of Its em ployees to feel that It recognises that Its prosperity depends In large meas ure upon two things the confidence Of the people served by It, and the loyalty to Its Interests of every man whom It employs. I want onch man to feel a pride In his work and In his connection with the company, and to look to Its officers as men to whom he can go with full confidence, respect and fair, Just treatment, and sound advice as to our common Interests. By co-operation. Individually and collec lectlvely, the highest concern of all can be secured. If with your holp, this condition can be attained, the Southern Railway will enter upon a new course of enlarged usefulness and prosperity and will become a more effective agency than ever tie fore for the material development and social advancement of the Southern States." Senator Lee H Overman Is In Sails bury on a short stsy He will very likely be here until the middle of April when he returns again to Wash ington and takes up the Brownsville matter. He may, however, return to Washington before the 10th of April. Dr. M. P.
