The cotton roar- ket was very quiet to-day with pries chances narrow and Irregular. The close was steady, net unchanged to 4 point bales. M.iv v''e' ' The market opened steady at a decline of 1 to points and shortly afterward shewed a net loss of about I to points 1 en the active months under scattering liquidation which may have been pro moted by Indifferent cables, rumors of rains In the Southwest, and the heavy estimate for to-morrow's receipts at Houston. But private wires from New Orleans reported that no rain had fallen in Texas, the stock market made a fair ly good showing, the New Orleans esti mate lor to-morrow was neuter, ana ins market steadied up during the middle session on covering and a little buying for a turn in anticipation of greater ac tivity on the part of bull leaders, after the holidays were over. The close was within a point or two of the best South ern spot markets ' were generally un changed and exports for the day were very heavy. The vote on the proposi tion to eliminate three additional grades Irom the New York contract resulted in the elimination of strict low middling stained, to take effect on the ttrst of April, 1908. RELIEF FROM RECENT TURMOIL After Rather Desultory Contest Be tween Opposing Elements In Stork Speculation, Element Which Has Been Carrying on the Content Practically Abandoned It Testing Operations Largely on Hliort Hide. New York, March 2S.-There was rath er a desultory contest waged between the opposing elements In the speculation for a small part of the stock exchange session of to-day. When It was demon strated that neither side was making any decided advantage the professional element which nas been carrying on the contest practically abandoned it. After that the market fell into a period of dullness such as has not been seen for many weeks. The quietness was accept ed as grateful relief from the recent turmoil of the market- The professional testing operations seemed to be largely on the short side of the market. The resistance which these efforts encoun tered was attributed to the activities of the party of bankers and capitalists said to have been organised for the purpose of supporting the market and supposed to be responsible for the rally In Tues day's market. When the market was seen to have regained some degree of ..equilibrium many brokers left the city to be one until Monday lo enjoy what they regard as a much needed rest. Active operations wero In progress at the sub-Treasury to-day in the working of the Treasury's relief measures for the money market. Payments on account of redemption of government fours of 1907 of anticipated April interests on the twos and the fours of 1907 and of de posits of customs revenues with the na tionals were all in progress. There is a general feeling of hopeful ness that money conditions will Improve after the first of April. The Bank of Kngland made a weak return for the week past, but discounts eastxl In Lou don and sterling exchange at Purls, which measures from the pressure ot outside money requirements on that centre receded shaiply. The showing ot the Knullsh bank therefore and In less (i. gne of the French bank were regard ed as reflecting the r mulls of past pres sure with a promise of amelioration for the future. Reports of a deaJlork be tween officials and operatives of West ern railroads which threatened a strike had a distressing effect on the market and helped lo the heavy ton of the later trading The marking up of prices at the en J of the day was on a small volume of transactions.
