Special to The Ouserver. ... Oaffney, S. C, April f. The elec tion to-day for : the i board of public works for Oaffney resulted In the election of J. N. Lipscomb, W. H. Ross and A. N. Wood. Considerable Interestwas manifested In : the on test, and with the large number of candidates who were in the field, there was no danger in getting an inefficient board. The gentlemen elected are all good business men and will doubtless come as near giv ing satisfaction as any set of of fcials who could have been elected. John Carson, who about one year ago stole a mileage book from the Southern ticket office, Is again in trouble. On yesterday he stole ' a Smith ft Wessori revolver from Mr, C. E. Fisher, express agent here, After stealing the weapon, Carson boarded the northbound local passen ger train and sold the pistol for $4 Mr. Fisher learned that he was at Bessemer City, where he went this rr orning, bringing his man back with him. Carson is now cooling his heels In jail. fc'neakln of the - southern' dls crimination against Oaffney In a the matter of freights, some of the largest shippers in : town handed your cor respondent the following flgurss, which they asked be published:. . Oaffney pays a rate of 29 1-2 cents 7. m. KI-uiP8l'le8t'lfll whll BlacksburgrYork- vine ana hock hiu pay s cents per 100 pounds Blacksburg. Rock Hill, Yorkvllle, Gastonla. Greenville and Anderson pay on canned goods from Richmond,. Manchester, Suffolk and Norfolk in car lots a rate of S3 cents per 100 pounds, and In less than car lots 45 cents per 100 pounds while Oaffney pays on car lots 48 cents and on less than car lots 62 cents. Thus Oaffney pays on canned goods alone every year hundreds of dollars more than the places above named. This is discrimination with a vengeance, and all simply because the Southern is the only .line of railway Into our town, is K to he wondered al that the merchants of Oaffney are - kick I ATLANTIC LEAGUE. le, Fla.," April 9.B!erkottes Men base followed by a clean -Mulianey, drove In the onlv ays game.
