The latest rip ple in insurance circles waB the effort made this week by the wife of James Rucker to have the life of James In sured. It so happens that Rucker is a negro; and that likewise he Is under sentence of death for the criminal as sault of his step-daughter several months ago. His case will go before the Supreme Court at its next session and, if the decision of the lower court is affirmed, Rucker will hang. This afternoon there was a surprise marriage sol emnized at the pumping station o the Durham Waiter Company, this being the marriage' of Mr. M. D. Bright and Miss Julia Roberts. It was the wish of the young people that the matter be kept a profound secret, until after the vowb were said and on this ac count the couple end those who at tended the marriage went out osten sibly to attend a picnic. The young people went out in buggies ond car riages, but it did not take the people long to suspect that there was a mar riage on foot, as one of the party was Rev. G. D. Adams, pastor of Trinity Methodist church. The marriage vows were said, the party remained about the pumping statiion for several hours and then came back to the city late this , afternoon. Mr. Bright is a very popular young to an, who holds a position with the W. A. Slater Company and has a large numlber of friends here.- Miss Robert came with her parents from Granville county several years ago, but has lived here sufficiently long to make a large number of friends and to bertry popular among-our people. At a meet ing of the board of directors of the Marlboro Cotton Mills, held at the company's office here to-day, the reg ular 2 . per cent quarterly dividend was declared, payable the 27th Inst. The quarterly, statement issued by the company shows a. net gain of 165,000 for the quarter, which Is 8 3-4 per cent, oa the capital stock. The mills have srooda sold ahead for several months, with cotton bought to cover same, thus insuring continued pros rarity. Tne statement also shows a loss and gain account of $255,353.71 with a net surplus of $88,651.97 which, taken together, places the mills in splendid condition financial ly.. Negro Preacher Held for Unlawfully Marrying Couple. Rochester. N. Y., April 18. Rev. W. F. Coffey, pastor of an African church at Olean, was arrested last night on the charge of unlawfully marrying Arthur Jones, colored, and Dora Hitchcock, white. Coffey was held for the grand Jury in the sum of 1500. Fred Hitchcock, the father of ihe girl, and Arthur Jones, to. whom she was married, were arrested and arraigned., They pleaded not guilty to disorderly acts. ; A Jury trial will be given the mto-morrow.
