Fears are enter tained that a bis tie-up of shipping may result. Of the . transAtlantic liners there was some doubt to-day whether or not the Celtic and Kroonland would get away to-morrow. It Is said that the Kroonland probably will not bu be able to sail before Sunday. Of about 600 longshoremen ordinarily engaged on these two steamers only about" 200 responded" to the call to work to-day. The stewards of the" steamers were called upon for help, but the work of loading progressed slowly. Most of the men who have gone on the strike are Italians. The Durham gas plant, known as the Durham Light & pwer Company, which : has been fi nancially embarrassed for some days, has been sold to a New York gas con cern. The deal has been oft for several days and was finally .consumated yes terday wrth the exception of having 4-the deal ratified by the directors of the Nw York concern the new own ers. Very little can be learned about the deal with the exception of the fact that the deal has been made, this being done partially through a Mr. Martin, of Raleigh, and the attorneys. It Is currently reported, ho-ever, that the purchase price was 3130,000. Mr. W. A. Erwln, of West Durham, has given the contract. for the build ing of Erwln Memorial chapel In West Durham, this being an Episcopal church and In the memory of the father and mother of Mr, Erwln, Mr. Joseph Erwln and Mrs. Elvira J. Erwln, both of whom died at their home at Bellvu6, Burka county. The chapel will cost in the neighborhood of $6,000. The contract for the build ing has been awarded to Contractor I. G. Schooner Was Destroyed by Explosion of Benzine In Cargo While Passing Through Bay of Biscay. Plymouth, Eng., May 3.-r-The Brit ish steamer Westgate, from Rosario, March 24, for the Tyne, arrived here to-day and landed the survivors of the crew of the British tank steamer Sllverlip, which was destroyed by an explosion of benzine in her cargo while passing through the Bay of Biscay. The ' Sllverlip, '"Captain'" Hocfcen, which belongs to the Shell Transport and Trading Company, of London, was on her way home from Singa pore. On May 1 an explosion of ben izne In her , cargo burst the vessel's decks open and set fire to the ship. The engineer and four firemen were killed and four others of the crew were seriously burned. J., May 3.-SwIft Justice was meted out to-day to Ed ward Gibson, a negro who on Monday night last attacked Miss Dorothy Paris, ip years old, of Wenonah. Gibson ""made no defense ; when 'ar raigned to-day and he waa. sentenced to 12 years Imprisonment and to pay a fine of $3,000. This is the extreme penalty for . the offense. Miss Paris is a student at the Friends School in Philadelphia. , . : Sentenced in Connection With Land Fraud Cases, a Portland, Ore., May 3. Former State Senator Franklin P. Mays and W. N, Jones were to-day sentenced by Federal Judge W. H. Hunt in connec tion with lai.d fraud cases of eastern Oregon. Mays punishment is a 310, 000 flne and four months Jn Jail and that of Jones Is 32,000 and eight months In Jail. Mays has appealed to the United States Court of Appeals. Body Discovered in Barrel. .
