Poi" the First Time in a Decade the Democracy of AshevJlle and the Re miblicam Will Have Opposing Tick eta in the Held Full Strength of Both Sides Will Be rolled Cam palgn a Lively One. Special to The Observer. Ashevllle, May 6. For the first time in probably ten years the Republican and Democrats of Asheville will oppose each, other at the polls to-morrow for control of the city government in straight party fight. The Republicans early during the municipal campaign determined to take theirs straight this irear and a ticket containing only the name of loyal Republicans was noml nated. For the paat number of years the Republicans have allied themselves with independent, movements, seeking to secure the triumph at the polls of "Citizens' tickets," These efforts have most generally proved disastrous and the Republican had to oear tne ooiuin attached to defeat Ift to-morrows' municipal election they will make . a , straight fight. The Republican ticket la headed by II. fi, Harklna, former mayor ol Asheville and for years coll set or of In ternal revenue. Opposing Mr. Harklns on the Democratic side for mayor Is John A. Campbell, cashier of the Cltl zens Trust and Savings Bann and for years city tax collector. The Republicans are the aggressors In the fight that will .jnd to-mcrrow at sundown. They have made the hght on a platform calling for a la?rase in the mayor's salary from 11,500 to $600 a year; a reduction In the ta'ary of aldermen from 3300 to 31W; a sub stantial reduction tn the tax rate and a reduction of 60 per cent tn water rates. Probably the most interesting and live ly feature of the campaign was the liberal mailing of a letter by Republi can Chairman Harklns, dated May 1, tn which tne Kepuniican compare Ashe ville's Indebtedness and tax rate with other cities to North Carolina and says to the voter, "You will be convinced that thecity Is being grossly misman aged or else It is controlled and manip ulated by reckless or Incompetent f'ffl To thl letter Chairman Adams. 0f the Democratic commltts, ha made vigorous reply, charging that the com parative, figures and. srat.mMiTs nre featured' with Jnaccuralcs and that Mr. Harklns and the Republicans have done Asheville an n justice. Hoth par ties will probably poll their full strength to-morrow and a Democratic victory is a foregone concl.nl jn. Good Shot at 119. London Evening Standard. .
