Whether a new committee will be appointed and the matter taken up again is a mooted question just now. . Mr. Frank E. Keehln has declined to serve as tax collector and sanitary officer of Salem, to which place he was elected last Monday. The salary of the position is not commensurate with the work of the office, the sal ary being $360 per year. Mr. Frank W. Stockton, recently elected clerk and treasurer at a salary of $1,200 Kas begun his duties. The class annual of the Salem Academy and College is just out. It Is entitled, "Sights and Insights," and the most handsome and expensive an nual ever issued by the Institution, costing 17 per volume. In an election in - the Centrevllle school district Tuesday the proposi tion to levy a special tax of 20 cents on the poll and 90 cents on tne iuu valuation of,, property for school pur poses was defeated by a vote of 88 to 9. The total registration was 150. The rpeular two-weeks' term of Su perior Court will begin Monday, May 20. It is for the trial of potn crim inal and civil cases. The speckled beauty, Mr. Rhinehardt de clared, was as nne a specimen as he had ever seen and what he believes to be the biggest Ush ever caught in western North Carolina. When plac ed on the scales it was found that the trout weighed four pounds, while ,a measuring stick showed that his flsh- shlp was 18 inches from tip of his tail to his speckled nose. Ihrle, of Pittsboro, whose home was destroyed by fire last even ing and reported in the newspapers, was in the city laat night- The news paper reports were the first intimation that he had of the fire. ' - Ashevllle, May 17. A story receiv ed here from the far West having to do with United States Marshal George Pritchard, of Indian Territory, who was formerly sheriff of Mitchell coun ty and recognized -as one of the most nervy men, physically, that (fever went out of the State, will be' of Interest in "this city and section. Mr. Pritch ard since going to Indian Territory as; United States marshal has done sone effective work in puttingan end to lawlessness and has won quite a reputation for himself. Last week a horrible crime was committed in the Territory, when a negro criminally as saulted a little girl of. German parent age. The brute was promptly arrest ed 'by one of Mr. Pritchard's deputy marshals and while en route to Jail an armed mob of 500 men took the negro and lynched him. Marshal Pritchard Immediately got into com munication with the : department at Washington and, while excitement was at fever heat,, went to the .vicinity of the crime and placed under arrest, charging them with murder, seven of the most prominent and wealthy cit izens or tnap section of the Territory The men Included a cotton broker. merchants, etc, . While the United States marshal was making the arrest threats against his life were made with a degree of ferquency that might have worried or afrlghted a man less gritty than George Pritch ard. The former Mitchell county sheriff, howpver, never hesitated an instant. He escorted' his "seven prom inent and Influential prisoners to the railway station and subsequently landed them in jail at South McAllst cr, where they stand, charged with complicity Jn the lynching of the ne gro and where they will be tried for their lives.
