The failure of his health and rapid decline was a-surprise to all who knew him in earlier days and his death Is deeply regretted. The Ladles Aid Society of the Meth- odlat church held a "box supper" at the home of Mr. Robert Armaur Tuesday night in the interest of the building fund for the new Church at Davidson. The young ladies bring the boxes and the boys buy them and the money is thus secured for worthy purposes. ' - Y - - Mrs. James Graham has gone to Florida for a few days' visit under special invitation from some of the missionary organizations. She goes first to Montlcello. Miss Lola Neel, and Mrs. Neel will leave In a few days for Alleghany county, probably Sparta, where the former will en gage in Sabbath school work under the supervision of the Presbytery's committee. Rev. P. R. Law spent the day here 'on business connected with the Standard. Mr. Charles Knox has In his pos session down tdwn an old relic, which It Is safe to say cannot 'be duplicated in these parts and most probably In any portion-of the Southern States. It comes down from slavery times and was made more than a half & century ago and found its way to the old Knox , home many years -back. Ex cept as a curiosity it Is not a pleasing thing to look at and Certainly a state of things In which Its use could have found any kind of Justification is hard for us in this ,day and time to conceive of. It is an iron muzzle that was fastened on the head anil in the mouth of a run-a-way slave who It was said could not otherwise be kept at home. One iron band en circled the forehead, another at An gles to this secures the muzzle still more firmly in place and two iron hooks set within the mouth made it impossible for the rebellious, but wretched creature to eat until he came to his lodging place and his iron bits and head gear were removed by unlocking. An old negro Jack Gilles pie, who lives near here, says he knew the slave that wore these shackles about his head and mouth and that the man who made the muzzle Is still living somewere In the South. The sight of the old rusty Irons and the fierceness of their look is . no pleas ant sight and does not suggest happy thoughts. But as a rariety this spec imen must be hard to match. condition records for more than thirty years past it will be seen that when ever the June report approached' 80 per cent the finar yield was moder ate. Only twice during the past 37 years has the" June report been be low 80 per cent, and In each case the yield was small, resulting in very high prices. Present Indications point to a June' condition figure of about 70 per cent, representing the poorest start on record. It is quite true that the cotton plant has wonderful re cuperative powers, but In order, to recoup something must have been previously In. existence. Thla year the cotton plant is. born in the grass, starts as a weakling, . with the strengthening fertilizers badly washed away, and with one of the shortest growing, periods on record ahead. PROFESSOR SAMPSON'S DEATH. Had Not Been Heard Generally at Davidson A "Box Snpper" oy the lAdlpfi' Aid Society Personal kci Prn,(An Unsightly Rcllo of Sla very Tlmm Special to Tho Observer. .Davidson, May 2J. The news of the death of Prof. ( John R , Sampson, which occurred in Virginia more than a week ago, does hot seem to have been heard st all rnerallv In Tiv!1- New York, May 23. Herewith I present my usual monthly report of the acreage planted, or to be planted, in cotton, and the condition of the crop at this time. The average date of my replied is May 17th. Tho. aver age increase in acreage as reported by! my correspondents Is 1.1 per cent The . condition reported by my cor respondents is 6l3, as against 76.8 reported . by my correspondents at the same time last year, and-70.8 in 1905. In the computation of the acreage I have adopted as my basis the acreage as reported i by the Financial Chronicle last year, as it is generally conceded and believed that the acreage reported by the govern ment In June 1906, was much less than actually planted and that some revision in the governmental figures will be necessary. On the basis of these figures the - Indicated acreage now planted, or to be planted, is 31, 909,000 acres, of which ,73 per cent, was reported as having been actually seeded on the 17th of May. The con dition as reported by correspondents Is the lowest ever reported either by me or by the government. The lowest June condition reported by the gov ernment was 74.1, In 1903, which was foljowed by a yield of 173 pounds of lint cotton per acre. Undented the condition of the crop throughout the entire belt, except in North Carolina and Virginia, is the worst on record, and it is well to bear in mind that on an acreage , of 32.000,000 acres, a yield of 170 pounds per acre would result in a crop of about 10,900,000 bales of a net weight of 500 pounds each, a crop no lowrer than this I believe to be quite within the limits of possibility, unless the weather from now until the picking is finished shall be practically ideal and frost is delayed until an unusually late date.
