Take Rare for Second Eight-Oared Shells and Then Defeat the Fresh Cornell Juniors New York Clubs Carry Off Greater Number of First Places. Philadelphia, Pa,, May 25. The Tale University Junior eight-oared crew fur nlshed the sensation of the fifth annual regatta of the American Rowing Associa tion her to-day by first winning the race for second eight-oared shells and then de feating the fresh and supposedly strong Cornell juniors. This was one of the closest races of the day, the Ithacans losing by only half a length. Tale's time for the course of one mile and 550 yards was 6 minutes 36 seconds. Tale had earl ier In the day beaten the Harvard and Pennsylvania freshmen by four lengths. The big crowd was all expectancy for the Junior collegiate race. The Cornell crew caught The water first and the row ing a 33 stroke led the other college eights over the first third of the course. Then Yale began to crawl up and at half the distance was halt a length ahead of Cornell with Pennsylvania two lengths further back and Georgetown hopeleHsly beaten. The Cornell men made a gallant effort to overtake Yale during the last quarter mile, but the wearers of the blue. were the better on the spurt ana although the two shells overlapped each other at the finish the Tale men had the race by half a length. The New York clubs carried off the greater number of first places. The New York Athletic Club was first In the rac for first eights, second single sculls, and first doubles. The Metropolitan Rowing Club, also of New York, won first pair cored shells. In the race for first eights the New York Athletic Club defeated the Bachelor Barge Club, and the University of Pennsylvania, In so doing made a new record of 6 minutes 35 1-5 seconds for this event, beatnr the record of 6:38 held by the Arnonuats of Toronto. The weather was cold, but a crowd of 5,000 saw the race. :,,'.: '...;.,.. ., Favorite peter tan defated : - f.r r j v.- , .. ,-r. I- r-r: . ---v v j r y i v-.ii: . f''M ( - i t, ".
