This com munity was pained at the death .of Mr. John B. Tillery, which occurreu here at the home of his daugnter, Mrs. .W. H. White, yesterday. Mr. Tillery was 84 years old and was one of the best known men or ms com munity. He was born In and reared and spent most of his life near Tinery, tn thin eountv. Miss Margaret Lytle, who had been 111 for some time, died yesterday morning at the Mission Hospital. Miss Lytle was a member of the Presbyterian church, a devout Christian and the announcement of her death will come as a great shock to her many ifriends. Surviving are a sister, Mrs. R. L. Worley, of this city and a brother, Z. C. X.ytle, of Gilmer. Tex. The ' funeral services were conducted this afternoon at 4 o'clock from 81 Phlfer street. Coroner Walker Drags Canal, But Without Resnlts Drcnnen's Aged Parents Greatly Distressed Over the Accident. 1 ' . Observer Bureau, 1209 Main Street, Columbia, S. C.; May 28. Thj body of James Drennen, the Bell Telephone Company lineman drowned yesterday In the lock has not yet been found. Coroner Walker went out to the locks three miles above the city at 6 o'clock this morn ing and dragged the canal until 8 o'clock this afternoon without result. Drennen went Into the water above the locks and was caught in the strong undertow which carried his body through the locks and Into the canal. The water In the canal for a consid erable distance below the locks was searched thoroughly by Coroner Walker and his assistants In a launch, but the body has probably gone down the, canal, which -is over three miles in length. -r- , The coroner will now wait for It to come to the surface, as It Is impossible to draw off the water from the canal without stopping the entire electric system of Columbia, which runs all the street and house lights, the street car system and several of the cotton mills and other Industries. Drenner's aged parents are greatly distressed over the death of their son and the failure to find his body. Newton was perhaps fatally in jured and extra Conductor Atkinson, of the Consolidated Company, was se verely Injured early this morning at tae car barns of the company near Ninth and Orange streets. The men were taking the cars out of the hed to go on the line, during the night before the controller on one the cars had been turned on. so that when the trolley was put on the wire the car with no one on 'board started back . the Uno,a runaway.
