New Torfc, May 28.-Detectives are trying to obtain a clue to the sender of a dangerous infernal machine which was received to-day by Dr. D. D. Daddlrrlan, a local physician. When the machine was opened at po lice headquarters it was found to con tain three shells loaded with shot, ar ranged to explode when the lid of the box was 'lifted. On the inside of the box was drawn a crude skull and cross bones with the following scrawl: "We hope this will kill you. If It does not we will get you yet "BLACK HAND." Dr. Markar G. Dadlrran is an Armenian and a physician of standing. For some time past he has received "Black Hand" letters In which de mands for 110,000 1 were made. The police had been notified of the threats and the physician has remained on his guard. A suggestion that attempted as sassination was a development of the political squabbles of local Armenians was not entertained by the Intended victim, wlio said that he could account for the plot only on the ground be cause of his name, he had Been mis taken for an Italian - from whom money might be exacted by Black Hand murderers. His condition row Is such that he may die at any time. The mayor had a very lar?e docket this morning and several defenflints were sent to the higher court. With the ex ception of this court, however, there was practically nothing doin? about the court house all day. The newspaper men here are having a hard time trying to get a few items of news for their papers. It has been this way for a week little or nothing being done of general Interest Among the cases tried by the mayor were three defendants charged with the illegal sale of whiskey. Earl Lipscomb, colored, was sent to the grand jury under bond and in default of security he was sent to 1ail. Two other Whiskey charge fell fiat one being against Ram Johnson, white, and James Strudwick, colored. The evidence was not sufficient to send these to the hisher court. For assault with deadly weapon Julius Hayes was sent to the grand Jury under bond. 'He also went to jail, not being able to fur nish the security. Other cases tried at this sitting of the court were for the smaller violations of the law. - Late Saturday afternoon Mr. D. S. Weaver, of Chapel Hill, lost his purse containing H06, as he thought. He adver tised for the money and thismornlng a small white boy brought in the money, having picked it up soon after it was lost by Mr. Weaver. It was declared by Mr. Brown's friends, that the Solicitor's predessor had collected the fee and that he could not legally be made to return the money.
