It b a tribute to Dr. Thomas Hume, Trofessor of Enslish Literature in the University of North Carolina, who is to retire on an annuity from the Car negie Foundation 'for the Advance ment cf Education on June 4th. The editor of the magazine, believing that the highest tribute that could be paid to Dr. Hume would be a simple state ment of the facts of his life, asked a few of the alumni of the University who have been Intimately associated with him In the class room and else where for brief sketches dealing with his life and work. Without a single exception they responded with a read iness that attested their enthusiasm for the work and the hearty sympathy with the motives which prompted it The tribute is entitled "Thomas Hume, D. D., IX.D.,M and the sketches which compose it are as follows: "His Life," by N. W. Walker.. professor of school organization in the University of North Carolina; "The Teacher and Man of Culture," by W. a Smith, professor in the Greensboro Normal and In dustrial College; "His Method," by Leonard Charles van Noppen; - me Teacher and Students Friend," by George S. Wills, professor of English In the Greensboro Female College; "The Literary Artist," iy II., H. Wil liams, professor of philosophy In the University of North Carolina, and "The Constructive Teacher," by Jose phua Daniels, editor of The News and Observer. Following these compre hensive sketches are printed the reso lutions drawn up and adopted unan imously by the trustees of the Univer sity at their last meeting. The tribute to Dr. Hume alone makes the May number of The Uni versity Magazine valuable to the Uni versity man. Copies of lt may be had by enclosing 25 cents to H. H. Hughes, editor-in-chief. The next article, "Our Debt to Cor nelius Harnett," an address delivered bv Dr. C. Alohonso Smith in Winming- ton, May 2, 1907. at the unveiling of the monument erected to Cornelius Harnett by the North Carolina Society of the Colonial Dames of America. This article, too, is of much Interest. Iri fiction the magazine is rather lack ing, the , preponderance of weighty matter leaving only room for two short stories "Uncle Simon's Protest, by D. M. Phillips, and "The Recluse's Story," by Kemp D. Battle. Both of these stories are good, however. In point of verse though, the maga zlne makes up for its lack of balance in prose. This Is flue largely to the efforts of Professor Edward Kidder Graham, who realizing some time ago the dearth of verse composed at the Hlil, gave to Ihis Sophomore class in English an exercise 4n versification. As a result he received a quantity of good verses, one poem In particular being especially worthy of mention. It is written by W.? H. Jones, in the sonnet form and Is probably, the best piece of verse that has been so far produced by an undergraduate at the University. It Is entitled An Indian Relic." The other poems are: "Eter nity Moments," "Her Last Letter," and "To M ," by S. H, Lyle; "Ron deau," iby M. G. H.; "Shakespeare's Sonnet Revised Version," by C. E. Mc intosh, and a sonnet on "Adam Kluttz,," by R. D .Eames, are all above the average of college verse. Alto gether the May number of the Maga zine Is the moat creditable with which Editor Hughes has presented the Uni versity this year. t i - f i t:,e Lo.:. r .1 of V:'.." i r- r .-!;! ts suture a t' tter t;-; 7'-' Sv":;:n fr Winn-faiem. it ii rn el that the comr.-.itts-e will meet m a f,., J,r, an 1 f -..llIV dSPrWse Of l'-'3 mitter." The recorder sentenced him to eight months on the county roads. From this decision the negro took an anneal to the Superior Court: The Superior Court Jury found the de fendant guilty and Judge Ferguson sentenced nim to eignt montns on me county roads, the same sentence that was given him by the recorder. Jones gave notice of an appeal to the Su preme Court. This is the first case heard on appeal from the recorder's court. Ashevllle Gazette-News, It Is an admitted fact that the lum ber Industry of western North Caro lina Is one of the most important In this section . of . .the State. During the past few years 1 great boundaries of virgin forest have been dhvaded by woodmen and now all over the western section of North Carolina are found big lumber concerns en gaged In cutting and ' sawing and marketing the valuable product of the forest. Interested parties who have traveled through western North Caro lina have been convinced that much of the great wealth of this section was to be found In the standing tim ber. ; ' ' '- There are instances of where a gig antic poplar has been taken from thej forest, sawed into lumper ana soia for more than enough money to buy a small farm. The price in certain hardwoods Is also rapidly gwlng up and the end is not yet , Twenty to thirty years ago walnut trees were sold for Jl and $2. The same trees would now bring $100, $200 and even - more. : A gentleman who was here-this week and who has. travel ed extensively through the western section of the State of late years tells some Interesting stories ' connected with the lumber trade. "In Jackson county," said this gen tleman1," I talked with a prominent lumberman of that county who a few years ago purchased a walnut tree for $22. The tree was cut and measured 10 feet and two inches at the base. It was hauled 22 miles to a railroad sta tion, loaded on cars and marketed. The net profit to the lumberman by the sale of that one tree was $117. That was probably three or four years ago. That same tree now would net between $800 and $400. "On Caney Fork, Jackson county, lumbermen told me that they had seen poplars standing which measured more than nine feet In diameter. I believe it U record that the United States government has found that these trees were the largest trees in the country aside from the J red woods of California Last "year a pop lar was cut In Macon : . county that eawea, out js.ooo reet or lumber. Fie ure this amount of lumber In dollars and cents at the market price of ; 1 2 a per theusand and you will see that this one tree was good for more than $600. It la paid, however, that the fin est poplar grove to be found in -all western North Carolina is InoJackson county. The poplars belong -to the Highland Forest company. The grove of poplars i In a little cove of several acres and experts estimates show that tnese popiars win saw out a million feet of lumber, which when marketed will bring tyy the holder a smau-sizeo. ionune.
