KlUingsworth, of Bstn. became in volved In altercation while, on the; Bath road about one mile from this city yesterday and as a result Mr. Archbell is now in the Fowls Memo rial Hospital in a very critical condi tion. - The facta in the case are mea gre thouith there seems to have been an old grudge between thesft ;two' gentlemen for some , time past 'i and ' when they met yesterday the lie was passed. TheHwo men then came to blows and Killlngsworth got the better of Jhls opponent and proceeded to carve him with a large pocket knife. Had it not been for the timely arrival')! a colored physician by the name of Beebe, whn drove Killings worth off with a heavy stlcH, Arch ; bell would have undoubtedly been killed. A warrant was a worn out by Justice of the Peace A. Mayo, of this city.- but owing to the critical condi tion of Archbell the case had to be postponed until he has improvedyuf flclently to be present. Mr. Killlngs ' worth is a prominent man in the town of Bath while Mr. Archbell is em ployed as a superintendent of Mr. W. P. Bsughm'a large truck farm on the suburbs of this city. ' Washington is to have another car nival during the week of September 23d-28th, This carnival will 'be held under the auspices of the Washing ton Concert Band. Mr. C. C. (Aliver, advance agent of the Johnny Jones Carnival Company, has been In the city during th last few days making the necesary arrangements. Prof. L. IV Randolph, principal of the colored graded school of this city, while in the town of Tarboro yesterday suffered a atroke of apo plexy and waa brought to his home in this wity over the Coast Line train esterday afternoon in an unconscious condition. Archie Mc Lauchlln, a desperate negro convict of Cumberland County,; has been arrett ed at Klngstree, S. C, and Sheeriff Watson went down after Win yester day afternoon. . McLauchlln was one of four convicts who escaped from the chaingang camp a year or , two ago, procured arms In some way, fled to a swamp, and had a pitched battle with a posse who surrounded them, during which McLauchlln and one of the posse. John Autry, were wound ed. The De Soto Lumber Company waa organised here Tuesday with a cap ital of $300,000, headquarters to be at Red Springs. The officers are J. O. Williams, of Red Springs, president; R. W, Massie, of Lynchburg, Va., and J. W. Johnson, of Raeford, vice pres idents; W. J. Johnson, of Red Springs, secretary and treasurer. The com pany, it Is understood, has purchased large bodies of timber land in De Soto county. Fla. At Tuesday evening's meeting of the board of aldermen Mr. R, H. Buckingham made the recommenda tion that the markethouse be equip ped with 1,000 incandescent electric lights, stating that they cost no more than the four aro lights now on Market Square and that an artistic and tasteful distribution of them around and through the building would add much to the beauty and brilliancy of the square at night. The first carload of rails for the trolley line of the Fayetteville Street Railway Company arrived yesterday. Robert Averett, white, 70 years old, has been committed to Jail dan gerously Insane, pending his removal to an asylum. The Presbyterv of Concord convened In a xpeelal meeting in the Davidson : College church this afternoon at 2:30 o'clock, Dr. W. J. Martin was in the chair as moderator and Rev, J. V. Laffcrty was Clerk. There -were present about fifteen ministers and licentiates and several elders - The former were the following: Revs. A. T.' Graham, J. B. Shearor, J. M. Wharey. CM. Richards, C. A. Munroe, Kennedy, ; Mosely, Walsh. Lafferty, Wilson. Spence, Matthews, Query and Wilhelra There were several matters of busi ness before the body. The matter of, placing the call to the Concord (Ire dell) group of churches In the hands of Rev. E. D. Browft was postponed. The cafl from Patterson Mill to Rev. Mr. Mosely for ft part of his time was allowed. Rev. John H,. Grey was dis missed to Virginia, his new field of la bor being Bedford City. Warm ex pressions of regret were made over hla leaving this Presbytery. i v ' One of the special features of the seaslon was the preaentatton of : Dr. Graham's request to have the pastoral relation of Jhlmself and the Davidson church dissolved and he be dismissed to the Presbytery o Lexington, tVa. The commission from the Davidson congregation to secure the church's consent to unite with Dr. Graham In this petition was Mr. F. J. Knox and Dr. J. P. Munroe, the former reading the resolutions passed by the congre gation Sunday, and Dr, Munroa speaking to and in explanation of these. .'."'- N ' i'..:'' Dr. Graham addressed the Presby tery for several minutes, giving to the members the reasons that had Induc ed him to ask for dismissal and speak ing most feelingly of his sorrow In breaking the ties of such long stand ing and of such tenderness and arrec tion.
