Pour Bales of Cotton Partly Con- cumed Spoiling Bee Given By t Daughters of Confederacy Tobacco Breaks Large. Special to The Observer. Loulsburg, Nov.' 28. A small fire at the cotton platform Tuesday after noon created a good deal of excite ment. The fire company rushed to the cene and found four bales of cotton belonging to W. P. Neal A Co. burn ing. The loss Is about $200, fully cov ered by (insurance. The Daughters of the Confederacy nerved refreshments Tuesday night for the benefit of the monument fund. The feature of the evening, and one which drew a big crowd, was an old-fashioned spelling bee participated in by a number of gentlemen who soon found out that r they did not agree In orthography with " the standard authorities. Joseph John Allen was in charge and gave out 'he ..words, which were astonishingly sim ple but sufficiently difficult to let the class know that it did not know hiiv to spell. Mr. T. H. Lacy won tho prise, a handsome book of poemi, and Mr. J. E. Thomas the booby, the rest of the class not even deserving honor able mention. It developed that fa tiueback speller under new-fang't J modern methods contains glaring er rorr. John Allen says so and he Is authority, nobody here having the te merity to question his orthography. Mr. T. H. Lacy Is a close second to Mr. Allen, as he was never stumped and would probably have beei there yet were not a halt called for ,-efresh- xrtntn. The audience roared as a number of prominent gentlemen one by one missed and had to stoi down. The spectators got the worth of ihelr tnoiiey, no doubt about thai. Tne circus was a success and the Daugh ters realised a handsome sum. The tobacco break Tuesday was the largest for years. The warehouse had all they could do to sell tni of ferings. Wagons choked tho streets In the business centre, unable to cnti-r the warehouses. The receipts c.f r t-t-jr. also were much larger than usual. Prices were satisfactory a no com plaints were heard. Salisbury was saintly and sightly thla Thanksgiving Day with pretty women going and coming, the churchea wide open and the lid down tight 'Over-theHuslness portion. The men were out gunning for the esculent rabbit and the most Christmas-like order prevailed. The saloon men and wholesalers yesterday entered Into a compact to shut down and Sallobury was veryvdry to-day by virtue of men who habitually vote the wet ticket. A report was started by an evil-minded man that Salisbury whiskey men shut" up shop because there was auch a heavy draft from Charlotte yesterday that local dealers could not honor It. The mer fact that 3,500 bottles came back here for re plenishing and 18 small barrels In an other order lent testimony to the Sus picion that the oil of gladness was running low. But like the banks, the bars were equal to all cal'a and when the pure-in-'heart abroad called for corn they were not forced to take "scrip." The day has been lovely in deed.
