Of more particular Interest, . however, locally is the announcement that the Merchants and Farmers' Bank has been designated a national depositary by the government and that deposits aggregating f 100,000 will be placed with this institution. Th 1st given yesterday showed that the Merchants and Farmers' Bank was the only North Carolina institution which pur chased Panama canal bonds. The statement was slightly in error as to the amount, of the bonds secured. It has been definitely decided by the athletlo dissociation of the North Carolina Medical College that no at tempt will be made to equip or put a baseball team Into the field this spring.- There were various eircum stances which gave rise to this de clslon, most of which are apparent on the surface bf the situation. It is not at all unlikely; however, that the college may enter Into partlcl patton In this branch of athletics next year, Preparations are already under way for a successful and eventful football season lit 1908. . As stated a few days ago, Mr. & M. Seymour ha been elected captain, and since then Mr. A. P. Kelly, ; of Moore county, has been chosen manager. . It is proposed to arrange games with the University of Virginia, South Caro Una University, Georgia Institute of Technology, University of - Alabama and with Nashville.
