Louis Post-Dispatch. st Tvnla women are low to ae pont a fad. such BS Sipping nign- hniis and cocktails, but the habit is increasing as the cltv .grows larger.- sa-s Mrs. Azby A. Chouteau. To nlease 'mere men." women are obliged to be companionable, ami nothing- adds brilliancy like the stimulation of rood drinks Amerl cans have been slow In learning tnat entinr and drinking are arts, and that It requires discretion to do either oronerlv. Of course, excesses are utiollv Inexcusable. Women are learning tnat tneir wits are made sparkling by drink and that In the strain of social duties a 'nip' does wonders to brighten one up. I doubt if the malorlty ol women like the taeto of highballs and cocktails Very much, but they do like the effect. Cigarette smoking Is growing in soDularlty also. Why shouldn t a woman have the privilege 01 mcse Indulgences, either in her home or in public? As the city Increases .In Izc a woman who is exnaustea rrom shopping cannot wait for her stimu lant until she returns home. Eastern women can give an order for uny thing they choose in tho very best plnces." Opposed to this view Is tnat or Mrs. I. Is. D. Morrison, who says: It Is true, that the drinking habit Is increasing among women? but I am strongly opposed to sucn in dulgence. in the first place, women can t stand It to drink the highballs and cocktails their husbands drink, and in the second place- they are placing approval upon a habit which is car ried to such excess that I can t under stand how any woman could approve of it. "Home women do not think Buy- thing of ordering these drinks when they are with escorts, but I cannot understand how any woman could bring herself to go unaccompanied to a public restaurant and give such en order. I hold to the old-fashioned Ideas. Our mothers and grandmothers did not do these things, and they were stronger physically and mentally than women are to-day. I disapprove of smoking, too. I think women forfeit the respect of men when they practice either of these habits in their presence. 'Ono doesn t need to follow any cur torn which Is so detrimental to health and which leads to such ex cesses as drinking does." THE WEATHER Washington, Feb. 4.
