FRANK SILER PREACHES. In" Earnest and Powerful Sermon at ' : -Tryoii..-t;tiet 'Methodist Church, Key. Frank Slier, ITctddlng Elder, Expressed the Crying Need of a (irvnt Revival in Charlotte) What la Essential Before a Great Out pouring Can Be Secured Hut Two Jtevivalu In CI kar lotto During Past . ear -.Vn Intcreatlug' Discourse. Rev. Frank Siler preached an' in teresting and earnest sermon at Try on Street Jdethodlet church yester day morning, his theme being "The tNed of a Revival." The theme was especially appropriate in view of the protracted meeting which Rev. Mr. iiiler and the ether Methodist minis ters of the city will conduct in the Tryon Btreet church, beginning on March 28th, this to be a union meet ing of the Methodist ' congregations of the city. Before he began preaching Mr. Siler presented to the congregation the claim of -the district parsonage debt, and asked" those who- were present t6 contribute tiie amount ap portioned to this church, which waa 1,100. Mr, J. D. McCall assisted Mr. Siler in taking the subscriptions and about 1800 was secured. , The worda of Mr. filler's text are found in Habakkuk 1:2 and reads as lollowg; "o Lord. . . revive , Thy work in the midst of . the years, in the midst of the years make known; in wrath, remember mercy." : ' ' "These words,", said Mr. Slier, contain three statements concerning a revival: 1. A revival defined. 2 Atrevival manifested. 3. The condi tions of a revival. - VHatxikkuk was : conscious of the need of a revival.' he . realised the spiritual decline of the Church as. It existed in his day. ; The history of the Church has been a course of re viva and decline; note the decline of the isnaeMtish Church under Ahas and its revival under Hezekiah; the decline under Aroon and Manassah, and the revival under Joslan. And the same course la true of the Chris tlan Church and has marked its his tory from Its beginning. The ChrlS' tian Church waa born in the heat of a revival. Jit the Synod of Rome A. D. 602, the laity was prohibited any participation In the Church and waa denied the sacraments and the Bible, and for 500 yeara no bishop of Rome preached. These " conditions marked fearful decline In the Church. ."Martin Luther revived the Church by emphasizing salvation by faith In Ms preaching. Wesieyand White Held followed with the plea for the witness of the Splmu-a conscious salvation. - . AMERICAN REVIVAL. "In America, Jonathan Edwards, in the early yeara of the Church. preached aa did Luther, emphasizing salvation by faith, and he waa fol lowed by Timothy Dwight and Dr. Finney, who like Wesley and White- field, emphasized the witness of the spirit. "It was In 1S58 that James C. Lamphler, a lawman, bojran a noon day prayer meeting on Fulton street, New Tork. that resulted in a move ment of : laymen similar to that in our own time, this movement result' Ing In the winning; of one million souls for the Church. A REVIVAL NEEDED. "Of the eighty million people in the United States to-day, less than one half are : members of tho churches. 'And while It Is true that one million souls In the heathen world have been converted durlnar the oast one hun dred yeara It is true stao that to-day there are two hundred million more heathens in the world than waa the case at the beginning of the last century. This is accounted for on the ground that natural birth In heathen lands so far exceeds . In number the converts -which result from supernatural birth. : "Look now at the revival as de lined In the text Consider first what it Is not. . A revival does not consist in bringing unconverted people Into the . Church. And neither does It consist in bringing converted, people into a church that Is not spiritually alive. Such a course as this would be to place a living babe to the breast of a dead mother. A meeting that is called a revival does not simply re sult in the addition of members to the Church. It is not a miracle. REVIVAL DEFINED. -. '. A revival Is defined in the text In terms of work, and to my mind this Is very definite. In. Charlotte during the past year there nave been two revivals, one In the Interest Of young men and vouna women, throua-h, the agency of the Toun Men's Christian Association and the. Toting Woman's Christian Association . and the other was a revival of interest In missions as conducted through the 'Laymen's Missionary Movement." "The revival needed now Is the re vival which will result in the salva tion Of souls. There must be per sonal work of Christians before this revival will ome. It must be pre ceded by a revival of personal work. There must be tact on the part of the workers and contact with the un saved. REVIVAL MANIFESTATIONS. "How shall this revival -manifest Hself ? It must begin in the home. In the hearts of the parents. It must alto make Itself known In the Sab bath school. There must iy evangel istic work In the Sabbath school. There are to-day only ten per cent The) Lucky Quarter. Is the one you par out for a box of Dr. King's New j.ife Pilla. They' bring you the health that's more precious than jfwals. 'Plioiics IS and 260. 1 Get It At Havvles of the young men of the'Dnted States who are members of the Church. It is a fact that to . per cent, of the members of our Sabbath schools ax lost to the Church.' - "In addition to work that Is done in the Jtome and In the Sabbath school to bring about a revival, let the laymen and the women of the Churah go to work. Let the city be divided into districts and let a census of the unsaved in the city be taken. Let this work be done as preparatory to the meeting which Is to begin here the Va.it Sabbath in this month. It is necessary that .this large pre paration be made.; ' NEED TO , BE CHRIST-CENTRED. "And let ua as Individuals set rid' of our own unrighteousness. Let us get rid of the pleasure seeking spirit for nothing so militates against soul saving aa pleasure seeking. This is because the pleasure seeker Is self centred, and the man or the. woman who Is self-centred cannot be centred in .others. What we need Is to be Christ-centred, and only those who are Christ -centred are soul-savers." THE WITCHERY OF KODAKERY.
