The receipt for the last quarter of 1307 amounted to 821. 535. . an Increase of $1, 387.53 over the last quarter of 306 and being 25 per cent. In ex cess of the average quarterly receipts for 1306. The school population of the city and suburbs, the territory embraced by the management of the Greens boro -nubile schools, shows 4 gratify ing increase, the numwr of children of school aire in the territory now acrreratlna' 7.203. The assessed ' valuation , of real estate in Guilford county is $20,650, flOO. this being a substantial gain over the previous assessment. A significant fact in connection with the manufacturing enterprises of Greensboro is the great diversity of lines of goods manufactured, there being no less than 70 distinct articles manufactured here.'' During the part nine months 312 dwelling houses have, been built in Greensboro, and a canvass of the rental agencies reveals the fact thati there are less than 100 vacanti houses In Greensboro at the present time. Newbern, March 2-The first num ber of the magazine, issued by the pu pil in the city high school has corns from the press. The editor-in-chief la Albert R. Marks and the business manager Cart P. Beetling. The first number contains about 25 pages and Is very creditable. Mr. C. I Stevens, editor of The Newbern Journal, hue short preface on an "Incentive to Better Literature. There is a a umber of articles in ad dition to the different departments. Newbern like most cities is troubled by the false fire alarm fiend. Hardly a week passes but that the fire de partment Is called out by a false alarm often after midnight. The effort is constantly "made to catch the guilty parties and there Is a standing reward for their arrest, yet thus far they have escaped all at tempt to apprehend them. The old-time fiddlers' contest play ed out for lack of fiddlers on the 26th but the firemen now announce that the fiddler will positively be pres ent on March 10th and that the con test will certainly take place on that date. Mr. Priest Pryor, engineer on the N. ac S. Railroad, ha been for two days In the Stewart Sanatorium la dazed state and uncertain mental con dition. Last Thursday night while at his home on National avenue he was sitting dozing with hi family and about 10 o'clock his wife went out on the porch to shut the blinds. When she did so, Mr. Pryor roused up, got a pistol and shot He seemed to think there were burglar trying to enter the houee and when he learned that he had shot at hi wife, he ran Into the hall and shot twice and left by the back door. ' Parties searched for him all night and he was found near the Ice Factory wbout 6 o'clock the next morning la a dazed condi tion and with two wounds In hi head. They are only flesh wounds and while he was unconscious for over a day yet he Is rapidly recovering and expects to he out In a few days. The Lucia, one of the gas boats be longing to Mr. George N. Ives, caught Are few nights ago while on the way to the sound for a load of fish, and was pretty badly burned. The cabin was destroyed and the boat oth erwise damaged by the fire. The fumes of the gasoline In the cabin became Ignited In some way most likely from the lantern. A neighborhood tfuarrel over a ' boundary of , some lands was aired In Magistrate S. R. Street's court Saturday, resulting In one Splcer Lane's claiming that he was shot at by Jack Ipock and his son, John Ipock. The Ipock, on the evidence of three person, were only shooting at a hawk and could not and did not know anything of the said Splcer Lane, proving that a body of woods prevented them from seeing anywhere near Splcer Lane's house. On the evidence Justice Street dis charged John Ipock but held his father under a $00 bond to appear at the next court. i The government lighthouse tender Jessamine, with headquarter at Bal timore, is coaling' at Redmond's whsrf. This vessel has the care of labout 100 lighthouses along the coast of Vir ginia, Maryland and North Carolina, and 1 of the old "slde-wheeler" pot tern with walking beam engine. ITEMS FROM! THOMASVILLE. Cars Soon' to Be Running on Belt Line New Fixtures For I'ostofBoe. Special to The Observer. Thomasville, March 2. Mr. Georne Perkins, of Guilford College, and Dr. F. E. Perkins, of High Point, spent Saturday and Sunday in the city vis iting their sister, Mrs. Charle R. Thomas. Work on the belt line :s progress ing nicely, already the tails having been laid about half the distance and the trestln along this .nuch of the track having been completed, and soon cars will run over the' line as far as completed. The fixtures for the poFlofnce are expected to arrive in a few day end will be promptly installed so that the oflice can be moved into now quarters by April 1st. The season for shooting fluall and other birds in Davidson county closed Saturday. This has been a very en joyable senson for all the tportsmen. Most of the Northern Sportsmen have gone back North.
