"V Cleveland County People , Think "Tlie Call of the South" a Far Deeper "Work Than Anything: Tin Dixon - Ever Wrote on Negro Problem. Sp rial to The Observer. Shelby, April 1. Mr. R. L. Dur ham's VThe Call of the South" has been received In Shelby and la being read with-keen. Intereat for .two rca. sons: First because of its reputation aS a wonderful hovel and, seoond, be cause the author, is a native of Shel by, being the "oldest son of the la mented Plato Durham, who la' con sidered by" many aa the foremost cit isen this county haa ever produced. Those who have read this novel and who knew the author s rather see a striking resemblance between the broad patriotic utterances ofEvana Rutledge the Senator from . South Carolina, and ,1 he magnanimous sym pathy of PJato Durham. The author's father at the time of his death waa one of the leading orators and think ers of his day, being especially help ful to his people during the. recon struction period after the war. The people of Shelby feel a pardon able pride In the acompliahment of Tom Dixon and Rob Durham :n the literary world. They were born on the rocky red soli of Cleveland coun ty, spending their youth and early manhood In the open air and sun shine and their college life, Dixon, at Wake Forest, snd Durham at Trinity. It Is commented that "The Call of the South" is far deeper worktin the negro problem than anything .-. 'r written by Dixon. CATLIM & CO.
