CHARLOTTE DAILY OBSERVER, APRIL 15, 1003. v :... TUS JCEW AGAINST THE OLD, Ifr. Osmond nan-Ins? Perks to Poll Down Ilecr-mcal the Mali of tbe Old First Iwptist Charon Toww With Aid of Ills White Steamer A Tug of War W hich End la Drawn Battle . - Mr. Osmond Barrlnger. who rathe plumes himself on bit ability to do ana Know more mour wins m sell ers! than anybodxl la. Charlotte, overstepped the bounds .yesterday morn Ins when ha essayed, with his Dlendid big White steamer, to ' pull down the half -demolished ower o' the First 'Baptist church. The tower in question is of . brie if. of ancient origin, and - as weU-grouhded and substantial as the faith jaf s the fathers.. Recently it was decided to tear down the old. building; and ereet In Its place a splendid new structure, of more modern architecture and more closely approximating the standing of the ' congregation In the community. '' little difficulty was experienced by Ifr. J. A. Gardner and. his assistants In removing the roof and walls of the main body of the church, nut tbe steeple presented certain per plexing problems of destruction not jnet witn orten in tne orainarjr tuumo of building operations. While de bating In his mind the matter, and seeking to devise some way out of the difficulty. Mr. Gardner suddenly decided to "Ask Barrint'r." "Sure." remarked Mr. Barrlnger, after the two had looked over the situation. "Just cut out slices from the two opposite walls, tie a strong, heavy rope fast about the top, ar range the tackle with the 'proper pulleys, and I will fret out my White steamer and we will pull down the walls piecemeal in a jiffy.' " go -much for the plan, its execu tion, however, did not proceed as its promoter hoped: tht-y underesti mated the solidity and strength of tower-walls. According to agreement, Mr. Gard ner had deep Kllces cut down the sides of the nteep-. and he fixed a heavy one and one-half Inch hemp Tope to the top. Pull'-yg and other supplementing; appliances were fixed to this rop and tied to a big tree across North Tryon yret and Mr. Barrlnger and his motor car were then- sent for. In a f-w minutes they arrived on the scene. Attached to the rear tir-n were chain to pre- -vent the wtv-U from wlipplnK on the macadam. The loose end of the hit? rope was then tied to the machine and Mr. Barrlnger was given the word to go. The car did nohle duty. At the given signal It leaped forth to the fray as If endowed with human In telligence. The alack of the top was picked up In a moment, and then the tug f war commenced. A great crowd had xathered to wHiu-hs the conflict between the Sphinx like, half-dismantled tower, which wonderfully resembled an itching of ' some moss-covered Norman cattle of the Middle Ages, and the hl motor car, the most striking, perhaps, of the inventions of modern-day llle. The rope quivered under the strain as the car crept up the street. Thn Individual strands could be discerned as they twisted and turned as If convulsed with pain. The pulleys creaked and groaned and the limbs of the tree to which the tackle was fixed shook. The walls of the tow r were observed to give a little, as if about to fall. but neer was one brick dislodged. At-the critlc-il mo ment, when the several hundred people present had their eyes lixed steadfastly upon the old tow. r, x pectlng momentarily to see it crash to the ground like an Immense pine amid a forest of lesser growth, the heavy rope popped, the machine shot forward like a bullet from a sling and, except for a few dust particles brushed away by the flying rope-ends, nothing dropped. A con ference followed and Air. Gardner and Mr. Barrlnger both agreed that nothing further could be done until more of the wall was cut away. The crowd dispersed with the tower still standing, and little the worse apparently for the pull. Inci dentally, Mr. Harrlngef had met his match. MERCHAXT CHASES TH1KF. Mr. H. M. Nathan IXtllncs to Allow Xegro Man to Adopt Trousers 1W- longing to Store tilves Chase So Hotly That thief Drops Stolen Good. Mr. Henry M. Nathan, the well known merchant, won for himself an enviable reputation as a sprinter, which made the Charlotte police turn livid green, yesterday afternoon about 1 o'clock. An unknown ne gro, whoe name If known would not add color to the story nor laurels to those already won by the merchant, entered the store on East Trade and " without asking anyhody's per mission left It more hastily than he entered, taking with him a pair of trousers which appealed strongly to Ms (esthetic sensibilities and his conception of the smart. But he went not out alone. The watchful eye of the proprietor had seen the overt act. arid when the ne gro darted out of the store and up East Trade toward, the square Mr. Nathan was close at his heels. A frightened glance over his phoulder revealed this fact and the thief quickened his pace. Store after store was passed, pursuer gradually gaining on pursued It was an un usual sight, which made spectators stop, look and llnten. Reaching Jordan's, the negro wheeled and made down North Tryon toward the police station. IJkewise wheeled the determined owner of the trousers and nearer and nearer he drew to his property now in the fell clutches of another. When the Charlotte Hotel was reached the ahductor of the trousers abandoned all hope of escaping with his booty and. drop ping the pants, perhaps in the hone ef delaying his pursuer and gaining time, he flew downth alley on the south of the city hall, entered th basement. traversed the water works department and was never seen more of mortal man. His whereabouts is unknown, but the trousers were safely restored to their resting place In the Nathan store. Alleged to Have Misreprernted! Bride's Age. The secret of D,an!el's fidelity was found in- the home and the character was formed there. The home was emphasised as being the most divine Institution upon earth. There was a ' large number of young 'people at the ser vice and the closing thought that Da vid's strength of character could be accounted for only by his decision In youth was forcibly Impressed upon their minds. This evening at o'clock the Feast of the Passoverrone of the most sig nificant of religious festivals, wlU be gin and will be observed for days by the Jews. The celebration commem orates the Exodus from Egypt where Pharaoh held the Israelites In abject bondaare and servitude, and it regu larlv besrlns on the evening of the 14th day of the Hebrew calender month of Nisan. The Passover Is really In celebra tion of two events. One Is the spar ing of the first-born of the Children of Israel when the first-born of Pha raoh's people were stricken by the pestilence. The , biblical narrative of this event remains fresh la the minds of readersoj the ' Scriptures as being one of the most striking visitations of mercy from the Angel of the Lord recorded In the entire series of holy writings. The other event which the Passover commemorates Is the pass ing of the Israelites from Pharaoh's tyranny through the Red Sea, and the Exonas from Egypt. This event Is more rigidly observed by the eating only of unleavened' bread. No Jew. orthodlx, or reform, eats, of any food with leavened dough, during this celebration. A special bread known as "matsos" Is prepared and eaten during the com memoration of the Passover, and the festival services are known as the "seder." " DEATH OF MISS HARKET.
