Mr. Goodman says that the portion of Louisiana In which he has been located was almost washed away recently by the heavy rains and crops are badly damaged. JAIL BUILDING UNSAFE. In its report to Iredell Superior Court In session the grand Jury stated that it considers the present Jail building unsafe in case of fire and recommends that a new one be built at once. The Jury also recom mended that a safe be purchased for the office of the county, treasurer. Last winter a grand jury recom mended that something be done towards Improving the jail and com plained that the prisoners could not keep warm in cold weather with the present heating arrangements. There Is bo doubt whatever that the county needs a new Jail. On election day, when the whole State was up In arms against the makers, sellers and consumers of boose, Deputy (Collector Davis, of fitatesvi He, and Sheriff Adams, of Alexander county, made a raid after a moonshiner's plant In the Barrett Mountain section of Alexander coun ty. They found and destroyed an up-to-date blockade plant, with the exception of the still proper, which had been removed by the operators n the approach of the officers. The officers had known for some time that an Illicit distillery, was located somewhere near the mountain, but all efforts to locate it had failed until election (lay. The recent completion of the ad dition to the Hotel Iredell Building has added II rooms to that hostelry and the new rooms have been fur nished with neat new furniture. Peo ple who travel about the state do Hotel Iredell the Justice to say that they find there more comfortable and better kept rooms than in any other town of the State. The Observer is requested to pub lish the following: To the Democratic Voters of North Carolina: Averse, as I am. to appearing In print, or to entering into a scramble for place or position, I recognize that, owing to changed conditions in this state, a man who would gain the favor of the public must not hes itate to let it be generally known .that he desires It. The sentiment, "that the office should sek the man, however beautiful In theory, finds little encouragement In actual prac tice. ."He who would rush In where angels fear to tread' la now coo commonly regarded as the hero of the hour, while he, who, out of re spect to time-honored tradttlcns, al lows sentiments of dellcaoy or pro priety to restrain hla activities, is looked upon. ' a lawyer charged with the duty of protecting the legal ngnts -oi me State. This was the regard In which he office was held by the publle when such men as Hon. B. F. Moore and Hon. J. B. Batehelor did not re- fuse to accept it. Their reputations, as lawyers, will be treasured by aspir ing young men In jvortn caronna when ihe nam of mere politicians, who have held high political posi tions' In this State, will be forgotten. If nothing unforeseen should pre- ent. my name will be presented to the Democratic Bute convention at J Charlotte, as a candidate for the of fice of Attorney General. If 1 may rely unon the assurances of support which I have received from prominent and influential Democrats throughout the State, my nomination will not be In doubt. Recognising fully that the Demo cratic party ,ln North Carolina has something more to do between now nd next November than merely w omlnate candidates for office, I deem It proper to say here that I am both hy herldlty, and from principle, a Democrat, and that for thirty years. have engaged actively In every campaign, and put forth my best ef forts in aid of the success or me Democratlo party, and the perpetua tion of Democratic principles. I have never before sought office at tne hands of the Democratic Slate con vention because my ambitions have been professional, rather than politi cal, and I preferred rather to be re garded as a lawyer, than as a politi cian. While I confess to a feeling. shared generally by the bar of North Carolina, that the proper dignity and value have not been accorded by tne public to the office of Attorney Gen eral since the war, I am quite sure that viewed in its true light it will be universally regarded as second in Importance and reponalbllity to no of fice wHhln the gift of the people. Should I be chosen by the people as the Incumbent of this office, for the next four years, my ambition -would be aroused, and my best eirorts ai- rected to serving the State faith fully and acceptably, thereby dignify ing the office and enhancing my rep utation as a lawyer., in my numoie opinion, the office' of Attorney Gen eral of the State of North Carolina hould be to the State government what the office of .Attorney General of the United States 'is to tae na tional government the head of the gal department of the executive branch thereof. So regarded, it is worthy of any North Carolina law yer's ambition. The present salary of the Attorney General Is such as to offer little Inducement to a suc cessful lawyer, but the opportunity, by "making good." to enhance one's reputation. Is, I confess, to one hoid- ng my views as to what tne omce hould be regarded, quite attractive. If I thought, however, that tnoso brst qualified tq, judge, deem me un worthy or incapable or satisfactorily performing the duties of this office. couM not do inaucea to k mr n.
