Party of .North Carolinians Start From Detroit En Rout to Greens-boro. One of the longest automobile trips undertaken this year is now being made by a party of North Carolin lans. Messrs. R. L. Holt, a wealthy cotton dealer, his son, Lawrence Holt, and J. H. Erwin have recently left Detroit In a touring car to drive through Canada to New York and thence to their home. - These people Just spent a month In Detroit on business and during that time Investigated a number of dif ferent motor cars, finally deciding up on the Thomas-Detroit Forty. The itinerary of their long trio in cludes Hamilton, Toronto, Buffalo, Albany, New York, Washington and thence to Raleigh. Situation Shows little Improvement. According to the most reliable sources, the. situation in the textile trade in the State shows little mate rial Improvement. The : curtailment of production Is beginning to be felt and experts say that the condition of the market is a little firmer for that reason. No substantial advance Is looked for until the fall. -June 1st will witness ths. shutting down of a number of mills in this -and ' Sister' States. . All of the Holt-Mebane fac toriesMn and about Graham- will have closed and . others too numerous to mention. One of the unfortunate and to-be-regretted effects ot this general shutting down of .'mills will be the vast number of .- the - unemployed thrown upon tha State. ' , ' . . The hour is o'clock and every body is invited no matter what can didate is personally favored. MANY POSITIONS OPEN, "v- Superintendent Cochran State , That He Needs fSerrral Teachers to Sup ply His Schools. Superintendent Cochran, of the county schools, stated yesterday that there were a number of good positions open for teachers In Mecklenburg. There are six positions available for women, these paying Cov a month for 8 months.' Seven teachers are needed for 140 schools of I . months" terms; sixteen are needed for 135 schools for the same length of time, and there are 20 positions that will pay from S3S to toO for terms from 4 to I months in duration. For male teachers there are 9 posi tions that will pay from $500 to 1600 and 11 positions paying from 1309 to 1450. ; While many of these Jobs will be tilled by teachers from this county. teachers from a distancs will be neces sary in securing competent principals for all of them. All teachers will be required to attend the summer-school at Davidson which opens June 18th. Capt. J. H. Bloethe, of The Salvation Army, has been successful in securing a tent to hold meetings throughout the summer m various parts of the city. The celebration of the one hundredth anniversary of the birthday of Jefferson Davis, which was held. In. the library yesterday morning, was an occasion of much in terest and pleasure to those who. at tended. The meeting was presided pver by Mrs, Thomas Lee Craig, pres ident Of the local chapter of the Daughters of the Confederacy, and the programme as previously publish ed was carried out In full. There was a good attendance of the veterans, who listened with pleasure to ah In teresting and well-prepared address from MaJ. W, A. Graham, of Lincoln county, on the "Causes of Secession," Major Graham made a splendid ad dress. The speaker reviewed briefly the events of -the years preceding the civil war, dwelling especially upon tho attitude oi the Northern States to ward the question secession in the early years ot the history of the gov ernment, and related many . Incidents that have not been generally pub lished before.
