Many well-known men of Salis- . bury appeared on the scene early and -began to push tbo claims of their ' bright young man, Mr. Hayden Clem- ent. for Attorney General. Judge . B. Wlnborne, of Bertls, and Mr. W. C. Newland, of Caldwell, arrived before noon, and began a canvass of the ' field. Randolph county men opened headquarters at the Selwyn for Mr. Vf. Wilson and w W,..Ha. wood, candidates for Commlssioneof Labor and ' Printing, are busy. The wire-pullers of the rubernatori al candidates got In some good work ' yesterday and last night. Among the things discussed in the innermost t-ir clea was the question of permanent chairman. Lata last night many per sons predicted that "Former Governor T. J. Jarvla would be temporary chair man and that Senator Overman would - head the permanent organization. 0 There were other guesses. The select " lag of the permanent chairman may have much to do with the result of the convention. , Messrs. Craig, Kltchln and Home sre1 In the Dink of condition, and In the hands of their friends. This Dromises to be a lively day, Hany of the delegates will arrive and - take up their abode In the city until something happens, uov. cnanes w Avcock and Gov. Robert B. Glenn are expected to-day. Special and reg ular trains will empty vast throngs, Everything will be on the qule vlve for the convention which aasemoies to- morrow at noon. MAXAGER8 MAKE STATEMENTS. ' The managers of the various can didates for Governor were visited by an Observer man lait nlgM and ask ed concerning the outlook. Mr. J. P. Kerr, Mr. Craig's cam- pgign manager, kali. "Since the delegates began to ar rive I find the Craig men in the highest- of spirits. They are more than hopeful they are full of fight and determination, and I have yet to find the man who thinks Mr. Craig will not be nominated. On very notlre- 1 ihla. tKlriT amAnw the Praia Able gates is their elation over the signal victory Mr. Craig gained over Mr. . Kltchln In their Joint discussion in fCharlorte. They find that the reports i that havA crone nut river til Rtata tnat Mr. Craig gave Mr. Kltchln one of the mot thorough and genteel drub- bingii that has ever been handsd out to an opponent in North Carolina v are fully verified by the citizens here who heard the diSL'utuifon, whether they happen to be, Craig, Horne or - even Kltchln men. The fact that : Mr. Kltchln had boasted all over the , State that Mr. Craig was afraid to meef him on the stump makes his irlenda all the more gratified that he ' msde good In ouch a conspicuous way. They o call, frequent atten tion to the boact of the Kltchln fol- . lowers that their rnnii was the only . one who could certainly Hurceagfully meet any Hepuhlhan ;n might be nominated for Governor, and nay that this claim will Imriily he repea-ted iiie me rrrmn vnumy man nau Keen deprived of hi three-eyed peacock ' feather and yellow Jacket In such a decisive manner." THE WEST DEMANDS RECOGNI TION. "The Western section or North Car olina has made up it mind to have something from this convention," said a man from a far western county yes terday. "We have not had a square deal m the dispensing of office at the hands of the Democratic party. We want Locke Craig, but If we do not get him we will ak that a western man, and we have him, be nominated , for Secretary of Htate or Treasurer. If e do not get the Governor we should have both of these places." This significant 'note was sounded by a man of Influence In his part of the Huts and he was In dead earnest. "The ftfMr congressional district ha had its share of Dcmorratl - candidates and the four western dlntrw-ta demand something. You must not forget the , west." At prewent the Ptate officers are filled as foll.jws: Governor Glenn, from Forsyth (the fifth district). Secretary of the ftale. Mr. J. Bryan Grimes, of Pitt;. Htate Treasurer. Mr. BenJ. H. Lacy, of Wake; Superintendent of Public Instruction, Prof. J. Y. Joyner, of Wayne; all of the candidates for Corporation Commissioner are from the east, and the Insurance Commla- ' sionar Is from Vance county. There will be trouble If the east tries to hog all the offices this year. The west will wake a vigorous protest. In the event that Mr. Craig is defeated for the first pleow on the itcket a candidate for wary 01 eiate ana one for State Trftanurer will be run' out. These are developments of the last few days. Mr. ' Craig's friends declare that ha will be nominated tut they are prepared to offer ether candidates for one or more of the more cherished Stat ftVea. MR. . MAXNlNVl in mvp-mc-vp J. 8. Mr. Horne feared that the contest would come to this end. When Invited to participate In the discussion last Feb ruary at Wadesboro he declined be cause he was not a speaker and be cause he feared that Joint delate between Democrat would result only In aiding the enemy..' We feel happy in looking back over tne contest to see that not a word ha proceeded from Mr. Horne or, as far as we know, from any of hi frienas which would tend to lower the atandlng or blacken the reputation of either Mr. Kitchin or Mr. Craig.
