STOCK MARKET. New York. Aug. 3. Leaders of a stock market movement rely more on a Monday market to show how much response to their leadership has been attracted, from the world outhldf. of Wall Street than on any other index. The explanation Is found In the prone ness of the man of alTali's to begin new Undertakings with the opening of th week, or with the beginning of somo Similarly defined period. Many Im portant commission house send out at the end of the wock reviews of the market, and forecasts of the pros pects that are more detailed and elab orate than the dally Information sent Out As a consequence, Monday morning often finds an accumulation of orders In commission houses for execution that represent a new phase In the market. It is the effort of the professional oprrator in stocks to take' - advantage of these new phases to his profit, previous operations of this class being wholly directed to the possthle attraction of this outside Interest. Commission houses to-day reported so moderate a growth of outside demaml that speculative opinion of the market Was left confused and unsettled. The first hour's transactions and the re cession lit prices which resulted, demonstrated that the pressure of sales 4o reallxe was greater than tho demand could support. Evidently last week s events had not brought new buying Into the market in sufficient Volume to gio strong digestive power to it. The hesitating and- Irregular fluc tuations of prices was the expression Of the confusion of the speculative mind. The violence of the upturn in . the wheat market magnified the in fluence of the reports of damage to spring wheat in some sections from rust and to estimate by a private ex pert affirming current views of the dimension of the crop. Later reac tions in tho price of w heat afforded some relief from the anxiety caused by these reports. The general list wai heavy and re flected only languid Interest. Time loans for five months are now su!H "Clent to carry borrowers over the end of the year and some relaxation was noted In the rate for this period.
