Aug. l-Ths speculation for advance In stocks wss hampered again to-day by the disquieting buoyaney of the wheat market. The financial dtatrlot has not relinquish ed Its comfortable faith that prosperous crops for the year are already assured. Drouth and high temperatures of the last few days, however, have not been without disturbing effect, coming at a period .recognised a crltloal for the spring wheat crop. Private expert! In the em ploy of speculative houses both In grain and In stocks have added the burden of alarming reports to the sstent of the harm done to spring wheat by rust. The Influences were at work In full force in to-day's financial . marketa The government crop report to be pub lished on Friday is awaited with more than usual Interest. Among the factors making for restraint, besides the wheat damage reports, were the preparations making by' the Intef-Btate commerce commission to investigate the proposed " Increase m freight charge's. The news of activity by 4he Department of Justice in oeeklng evidence to prosecute the suit against the Harriman railroad merger was regarded as a possible disturbing fsctor as It ah a 11 develop. Our advices received by cable from India to-day state that, good rains have fallen throughout 'that country and that the prospects are favorable for a good demand for cotton goods In Man chester as a result of these favorable conditions. Mr. Habersham King in his Circular of August 3d. says that the crop as a whole has made favor able progress during, the last ten days of July, just escaping from in Jury, through showers in Texas and good rains east of the ' Mississippi river. Liverpool was disappointing, though the market opened steady to meet heavy selling of October by a prominent commission house, which wss attributed by the traders to some one of the bulls selling In ad vance. There was little other feature In tna'-day's -transactions, the trade watching the condition In central Texas, which appears to be the only section needing rain. HUEBARD BROS. & CO. Naval Stores.
