The market became Ttrr weak and October sold oft to t.SS, . or SI points net lower and 63 points un der..th high level of last Friday. Later montns declined also, with prices show . tag - net loss of 17 to 20 points, and - closing, within a point of tha lowest. Au- , ' gust" was comparatively quiet and at tha ' , close was only 13 points net tower. Ex- Y pectations of weaknesa In Southern apot r markets with tha approach of the roar ' ketlng season under, favorable- crop con . dltions wera -undoubtedly Influential In ' . the decline and tfierei was considerable Southern selling through commission , houses during tha day. .. - Receipts at tha porta to-day 8.S6I bales against 1.541 last week and 1.503 a year ago. For the - week estimated 25.000 against 21,883 last week, and 4771 last year. To-day'e receipts, at New Orleans 491 against 202 last year, and at Hous ton 2,402 against 78 last year. THE STOCK MARKET. New Tork. Aug. W.' The' tone of the - stock market was nervous and Irregular at time to-day, but the sweep Of the broadened demand was sufficient to dom inate tha upward course of prices In spite of some setbacks and some obstacles op- . posed. Within an hour after the opening there was a break In prices thst ap proached in violence that of last Friday. Tha, same stocks, American Smelting and National Lead, were conspicuous feat urea of the break which waa supposed to bo' duo to a . phase of a sensational ad vertising' campaign to attract speculative interest In tha market now being waged by 'a Boston ' speculator. The market wis rendered rather fever ish by ths influx; of buying from, outside sources. Tha Immediate news of th day was not of much Influence. The news of tha' crops wn reassuring. Tha highest prices of the present movement were made during the course of to-day and advance were well sustained st tha closing. Bonds were firm. Total sales, par value, W, 690.000. Vi.fi. bonds were unchanged on call. Total sales to-day 921,800 shares. Includ ing: Copper 33,100; Smelting 65,000; Sugar 11.200; Tobacco 200; Coast Line 900; C. A O. M00; St. Paul 59,600; I as N. Spots were easy, He down on all grades; mid dling 10i4; sales were 249 bales on the spot and 4 to arrive. Futures loperied barely stesdy with the active months 4 to ( points below the close Saturday. The decline was at tributed to an easier market at Liverpool than had been expected, generally favor able conditions throughout the belt over Sunday and a forecast for the next 24 hours of good weather In the cotton States. A favorable government weekly report to-morrow Is anticipated by the trade, and Indications point to a eontln uatlon of the present conditions. ' Considering the number and strength of the-bearish factors, the market ruled fairly steady at thj decline during the greater part of the session.. That there - was not a decided break In futures was due largely to aborts In the Northern markets, and their strenuous efforts to keep he-market up. It was theopenlng day of the week and the beginning ot this period waa marked by -a volume of good crop reports from throughout the belt, which .conformea wlthr those of a New Orleans ' authority 'published this morning. The conse quence waa that . the market started slowly on its downward course at the first call and continued to the very close which was quiet with the active months 22 to 28 points below the close Saturday. Closing bids: August 9.80; September t.4Br October . 9.23; November 9.12; De cember 9.12; January 9.W; February 9.17; March 9.25. . ... Dry Goods Market. Nfw Tork. Aug. ' 10.
