New York, Sept. I. An unusual thing about the current upward movement in prices in the stock market Is the .freedom . with which admissions are heard of the part played in It by professionalism. Ad- ' monitions to this effect are common to most of the market letters, and advices sent out by commission bouses to their clients. A smalt combination of very wealthy capitalists is given credit fOY the summer rise in prices, and there Is no disguise of the. belief in the large part played fey manipulation in the advance. ' -There was as little news as lately usual t explain the upward movement of stpcks to-day. The Western Union state ment of earnings for the September Quar ter had some effect on sentiment with Its transformation of a deficit last year ' of tl.Mt.Ul Into a surplus this year of . flfo.US. The day's crop news did not quite the feeling of anxiety over the corn crop. The day's changes In the money market were not perceptible in tm quo- . tattoos. The rise la discounts in foreign exchange here has revived discussion of the possibility of gold exports again. The requirement is supposed to be for large ..forthcoming government loans abroad. There was a small transfer of currency to New 'Orleans and other Indications of a rise in the tide of the. currency moVement towards the Interior. Sales to realise profits had some slight effect in reducing the day's extreme advances. Bonds were 'firm. Total sales, par value, I4.S96.000. United States bonds were unchanged on . call. A Oo.'s Cotton Letter. Special to The Observer. New York, Sept. 9. Liverpool was bet ter than due this morning with the lra proved spot demand from Manchester . again the feature, spot sales reaching 10, ' 000 bales.. Our market opened lower as : compared with the cables, but almost Im mediately Improved on a demand from th. rtc.tohcr shorts which absorbed all i offeringa and gradually brought about anl Improvement In the whole market. This . demand tor October continued the fea ture In the, afternoon, gradually widening the differences between the months. The South did not generally follow the ad i Vance with buying orders, but they were less free sellers. Wall Street sold quite freely on the extreme advance, easing - nrlces off somewhat from the top. Our late cables from Liverpool reported freer offerings from the South this, af ternoon without - an Increased basis and also stated that .there were prospects of settlement In the Manchester labor dis putes; although spinners were disposed to go on short time. There is undoubted ly -somewhat better demand from spin ners at thi cents which should steady the market pending an increase, in receipts, 'V Chicago Cattle.
