A sad death, and one which will be mourned by many young people of the town, oc " curred yesterday morning at 1:20 o'clock, when Miss Lurlle Deveraux. daughter of Mr. and Mrs.. A. J. Dev ereaux., passed Into the Great Beyond. Miss Deveraux had been 111 about sev en wMks with typhoid fever and other diseases and it had been real ised by the attending physicians for some days that ehe could not live. One week after he became ill she was taken to the BUllnKslcy Hospital where everything possible was done In an effort to save her life. Brief burial services were conducted at the grave this morning at 10 o'clock by the family pastor. Rev. C. A. Jenkins, of the Klrst Baptist church, and the body was laid to veil "neath a mound covered with many floral tribute. A larK" number of friends gathered In the protty Oakwood Cem nerv to rav their last respects to the popular young woman. Miss Devereaux was 20 years Bid. She moved here with her Barents and brothers from Sal isbury some years ao, and by nor aweet disposition had won many warm friends among the young peo tola of the town. Bhe was a favor tte with her parents, being the only daughter at (home, and the father, who auffered a nervous breakdown a few days ago, and the mother are tmth almost prostrated with gTlcf. Besides her parents Miss Devereaux Is survived by one sister and three brothers, via: Mrs. A. L. McNeill, of Salisbury; Mr. E. 8. Devereaux, bt 8a annah, Ga.: Mr. Julian Devereaux. who Is in the fnlted States army. and Mr. Russell Devereaux. who lives at home. All had been here at her bedside except Mr. Julian Devereaux, who -was unable ty come. Other relative who arrived during the past few days are two aunts. Mrs. w. E. Pere;ory, of Baltimore, and Mrs. E. J. Carter, of "Washington City. Miss Devereaux spent much time In Balti more with Mrs. Peregory and the latter was much attached to her. This afternoon at I o'clock at the county court house Impressive exercises were held in memory of the late Judge Frederick Moore. The memorial committee, composed of Locke Craig, James II. Merrlmon. Col V. S. Lusk. J. M. Gud ger, Jr. and Marcus Erwin, appointed at a recent meeting of the Ashevllle Bar Association, submitted appropri ate resolutions on the death of Judge Moore. Judge Merrlmon was chos en rhairmsn of the meeting. Elo quent and impressive tributes were raid to the late distinguished . jurist by several of the members of the bar and Judge Oulon. who is presiding over the present term of court. A few days ago the traveling representa tive of a business concern located In a blatant rltv time Into town, can vassed the trade industriously and landed several orders of good size. After his day's -work was done, he went to the telephone and asked for "Long distance." After the usual preliminaries he called for his broth er In the distant city. The brother could not be located. Well, then, perh.ps the operator could get his sister. No, his sister also was out. He was sorry, but would call again later, and left the booth, without having to pay toll of course as he did not get his party. The next day he departed for pas tures new, and the telephone compa ny was none the wiser. But the house had received a correct A-eport of the business done by the drum mer that dHy. and the toll was saved for himself or the house. There are more than two hun dred cases on the criminal docket, which is one of the largest for some time. Two of these cases are fey- mur der, the principal being negroes In both cases. R. A.
