A CHARLOTTE DAILY OBSERVER SEPTEMBER 23, 1908. Financial arid. Commercial COTTON MARKET. . V ' New Tork,. Sept. B.Th ( cotton mar ket wu quiet to-day '- end fluctuationa, while Irregular, were narrow. The Close u steady; net .unchanged to 5 points lower. Sale were estimated at ' 125,000 bales. The market opened steady at a -decline ', of I to t points with the, aotlY months selling I to polnU lower on or Imme ; dlately following the cell owing to lower cable, the- continuation ot me kjuuui in J Manchester and local bear pressure. The weaper map waa good and receipt ran - heavier ' but offerings here were not c V agreeable owing to a fear that the Kn- v glish labor trouble might be auddenly settled os that there, might be another apell of unsettled weather in the South. Spot houses seem to be supporting Oo- ' tober and after the initial decline the ' market ruled generally steady with Oc- ' tober at -one time ahowlng a net advance of one point while later months were net unchanged to 1 point lower. The close -'waa a shade oft from the beet under re- - alialng by early buyer. Southern apot markets officially reported were ki. tow ' ' er to 1-18 cent higher. Most' private re ports from the Interior indicated steady . holders and advlcea from the Bouthwest . said that there waa a demand for end of September and first haM of October shlpotent. It is reported that 600 bales of the local atock will be shipped out to domestic mills in the near future. One " of the private cables from Liverpool said there seemed to be no effort toward a - settlement in Manchester and that mas ters were very determined. Rcelpts at the ports to-day 7197 bales against 62,154 last week and 49.192 last . ' year. For the week 270.000 balea against . Z1S.883 laat week and ffl.JIS last year. To-day's receipts at New 'Orleana 8,917 bates against 1.882 lsst year, and at Houston ,8.71 bales against 18,984 last . year. STOCK MARKET. New Tork. Sept. 12.-The disorder oi the transactions at the stock exchange to-day during the demoralised break in prices was not greater than the excesaive confusion and contradiction of the opin ions held aa to the causes tof the eollapse. That it waa proof amounting to a demon stration of the flctltous and excessive na ture of the previous advance waa agreed to without dispute. The sensational col lapse which prices have undergone has ot altered the conviction as to the source of the operations which advanced them previously but the motives which prompt the abandonment of the previous position offer a subject for the most di vergent opinions. Nothing Indicates ur gent necessity for liquidation, with sur plua reserves of the banks still above $60,000,000, in spite of the Inroads made upon them and with call loana easily pro curable at 1 per cent, or allghtiy above. This strengthens a conviction that the leadera of the recent speculation must have been entrenched with supplies of credits which would have protected them from pressure of lenders which would precipitate any such urgent selling mar ket as Is now seen. The rise in prices had the growing ef fect of bringing to market holdings of an investment or partly investment charac ter, both from home and foreign sources. The necessity of accepting these offerings in order to maintain prlcea proved a growing burden to the efforta of the sup porters of the market. - There waa the openly expressed suspi cion on the atock exchange floor that the disorder in the market was a deliberate purpose of forces which bad fostered the previous . " pointing a warning of the dangers to be apprehended from revival of political ac tivity agalnat corporations and wealth. Sales of upwards of a hundred thousand shares in to-day's market were ascribed to broken who have had the largest share In executing the ordera which car ried forward the long advance In prices. Blocks of stocks were hurled upon the market to-day from euoln sources time af ter time when prices showed any dispo sition to rally. With the market seeming ly laoklng all support the bears operat ed very recklessly and their buying to cover shorts towards the end of the day waa ea an ernonuoua scale. The violent recovery thus caused left gains for the day In not a few Instances and material ly altered the whole appearance of ear lier losses. The closing tone was feverish and excited, with the shorts still cover ing heavily. ' Bonds were weak. Total sales, par value. 34.142.000. ' U. 8. bonds wars unchanged on call. Durham, Sept. 1L Before Mayor Graham Tom Green, who admit hav ing stabbed Emmett West yesterday In an effort to give Durham three homi cides In one week, was sent over to court under a bond of $150, which he could not giye. There appears but little hope that the of ficer -will b able to connect Green with the Roberson murder. Green was rrtght watchman at the Chatham Lumbar Company plant and It was some subtle connection with the Batei negro that rested a suspicion on him.
