New York. .Sept. 23.TTbe tranquil state ) hioh tha tnrlc ' market fell to-day after the turmoil of yesterday formed a strong contrast, a no ireMiunii.nou w ' so sudden as to appear nnatural and was for that reason, made the ground for some suspicion and tor reserve In spec ulative commitments. Very .large buying orders were executed by a few Influential ; stock exchange houses who were most aetivs tn the renewing. Their transac f thin were largest tn the two Harriman ' Paelflo stocks and in Beading. Almost half the days business wss done In the first hour. Practically the extreme range of the day's price Actuations was es tablished also in that time. The higher opening prices brought out realising sales without a relapse which wiped out the " gains. Prices rose sgain before the end -of the hour and this tlxed the limits of he price movement afterwards. It was traversed many time, but without any great animation or urgency. J"" wer greatly congested In the H"lman ' Socks. Reading. Copper and Indus rial. The day's news was not Important and was little regurded. attention being con centrated on the clearing up of Previous speculative commitments. The br8 oTThe drought in the West was heralded with satisfaction but the warning of the probable cold snap to follow made the torn market sensitive. The dy eodrf at tha stock exchsnge with one of the nu merous upward swing. no more assurance displayed In the move ment than on previous occasions. Bonds were Irregular. Total sales, par value, $3,222,000. IT S bonds were unchanged on call. Total sales of stocks to-duy were 801.700 .hare, "eluding: Copper 87.000: Smelting Hu-.r 1 208; C. & O. 1.500; Erie 88. A continu ous demand during the morning from several commission houses which have bought freely during the past lew ' days, brought fcbout a sharp lmProver ment in face o? the large receipts and the disappointing advices from Liver pool. The latter market rallied, closing- firm on American buying ; based on the advance here. H w thought that the basis for this der ;mand is the Idea that the October bureau report will be a bullish one, an ! Idea which prevails generally among . tha trade as the newspapers contain ' many reports of deterioration dur ng September. While this deterioration occurs each year, the price Is rela . tlvely so low this season that they assume the demand from spinners win increase and cause an advance on these reports. Cablegrams from Llv- erpool are pesslmtstic over the situa tion of the dispute between spinners and operatives. ' New Orleans Cotton. New Orleans, Sept. I3.-Cotton: Spots were Arm and unchanged; middling l-16c.- sales were 1.800 bales on the spot and 1 400 to arrive, business showing a " little improvement with the presence of more buyers In the market. Futures opened steady with prices from t points under last night's close to 5 points above it. The market throughout - the day was ruled almost entirely by weather considerations, predictions of frost for States north of the, Ohio river , gave the bulls a pretext for apprehension ' that damaging cold might reach the cot ' ton belt and the presence of several new ' storm centre near the cotton States fur- . ther atrengthened the operations of the bulls. Selling on the advance pulled prices : down somewhat from early high levels '.and they closed steady. 2 to 8 point" ," above last night. - Closing bids: Sept. 82 ssked; Oct.
