They know that special officers of the government are sent to every part of the country to spy upon the old soldiers of the 1'nlon to see that the pension laws are not violated, even In the most technical manner. They know that revenue officers are con stantly trailing through mountain fastnesses nf North Carolina. Tennes see and Kentucky to see that the poor devil of a moonshiner shall be de tected and punished. They know how special officers have for years been ferreting out lottery enterprises and like violations of law. Mr. Bryan hns never been railed upon to fur i.ish Information as to any of these eases. Hut when the attention of the learned Attorney Genera Is culled to n monstrous, continuing crime, known of all men. the encumbent of thnt great office declare that he has no personal or official knowledge and declines information except In the mo-t specific form." Atlanta, Ga., Sept. 23. All hope on the part of the complainants In the freight rate investigation, now being made here by the Interstate Commerce Commission to gain a glimpse Into the Inside negotiations and discussions between the railroads leading up to the advance made in freight rates recently, was dispelled this afternoon when the stenographer who made the notes at the principal meeting swore that he-had burned the notes three weeks ago. The ste nographer was called to the stand after E. II. Hintoii, chairman of the Southeastern Freight Association, had successfully parried a number of questions to the part each of the roads concerned had taken In bring ing about the Increase.
