Th reeldence and the bam Of Mr. w Siimroervllle. at Shopton, south of the city, were burned to the ground la t nltfht between iu:au ana it o'clock bv fire of unknown origin The Inmates of the home, inoiuainpr Mr. and Mrs. Summervllle. botn ot whom are of advanced years, in latter being practically bedridden for a year with rheumatism, escaped safelv from the house. The glare of the fire could be distinctly seen for miles. It was clearly visible in Char otte and throughout all th sur rounding- country. At the acen the excitement was intense. Hundreds of people gathered and worked to save adjoining houses from the threatening danger. The nearest telephone was at the store of J. R. Hayes, a few hundred feet away from the blaze. . Th Are originated In the cook room, where It was discovered after o'clock by the son of Mr. Summer- ville, Mr. Graham Summervllle. Had he not discovered it when he did and given the alarm, all must have perished, for the house waa falling In by the time they got out. All had retired for the night. The entire stock of household goods was de stroyed. A number of outbuildings were burned. There were no cattle or horses In the barn, fortunately. as they had sold out their stock re cently. Special by Staff Correspondent, Rockingham, Sept. .6. The Rock- Ingham Power Company, Which a Aawaioninr Blewett Falls, on the Pee Dee river, near Rockingham, will hav 10,000 horse-power ready for distribution by next July. "Th Push Rockingham Forward Club," of Kookingltam, chaperoned, or escorted, its guests to the home-coming festivities to the falls last Thurs day. The distance from Rocking ham to th river Is eight miles and the rood very good. Most ot us mad th trip in automobile. 1 had the pleasure of going with Mr. T. C. Leak, Jr., Judge Walter H. Neal and Deputy Bheflff Palmer. We mad th run home In i! minutes. On ar- tiving at the Pee Dee w crossed to th Anson side in ooais ana not manned "by negroes. The first thing of special Interest that I w at Blewett Falls waa the grave of Thomas Biewett, wno aiea In l!7 at tne ago oi mree eoor rn.au ten. Mr. Blewett, for whom th falls war named, came to thl country from England. He owned 1,100 acres up and down th Pee Dee. . His res idence, which waa In Richmond coun ty, , was one of the finest country homes In the State. The old house decayed and fell years ago, and there is nothing left to -mark the old ait but th well. - On the east bank ef the river, in the sand, within two hundred yards of the water, is the tomb of the old Englishman. Th grave and stone are enclosed in an Iron fence, donated by Gen. Stephen D. Lee. who married a granddaughter of Mr. Blewett An eighth of -a mile hp stream is tne magnificent dam being put in by tne Rockingham Power Company, which has Its office oa th Anson side. ,,' The plant at Blewett Falls.1 when completed, will be unique in . many respects.' If win supply between $0,000 andls.ooo horse-power, put ting it in the game class with th larg est single plant of the Southern Pow er Company, on the Catawba. The back water from the dam, which is 1.S00 feet wide and feet from base to top, will make a beautiful take 1 1-1 miles long and make tne river nav igable for ' $J mile.- Th rervolr will cover $.100 acres, in the cours of tlm th Blewett Falls lake- will be on of th most popular for boating and fishing tn. th South, It is said that it win be the largest body of fresh water In th State. . : . When completed the Blewett Falls plant will hav cost tour and a. half million dollars. At present two hun dred men are at work on th dam, speedway and power house founda tions. The force was rducd from fifteen hundred. Later, when th erecting of towers and th stringing bgln, the number will be Increased. The panic had something to do with the reduction but not o much aa an outsider might imagine. It held back the work in other way. Foundation for the power house ar being put In now. Th dam will not b closod until the race, th pow er house and machinery ar ready. The building of line will begin In sixty days. It Is estimated that Rockingham cotton mills will take three thousand of th horse-power. Th remainder will be disposed of at various places within on hundred and fifty miles of th falls. Most of It will go south east. Many new enterprises are be ing planned. We were treated royally at Blewtt Falls Thursday, Mr. W. H. Brown, th general manager of th company, had come down from New York to participate in the festivities Of th occasion. Mr. W. A. Leland, who used to be with th Southern Power Company at Great Falls. ,8. C.. now resident manager and chief engineer at Blewett Falls, received th visitors cordially. He was assisted by Mr. W. R. Bonsai, who has charg of th construction work of the dam and power house; Mr. J. 8. Vlche, eleo trical engineer; Mr. William P. Snow, resident engineer, and others. Every-, thing possible was done to make their guests comfortable .and , happy. Messrs. Brown and Leland pointed out the Interesting features of th work. A regular picnic dinner and mint juleps. lemonade and other good things were served. No one suffered (or food or drink. - The recent freshet did not in any way injur the permanent work dona , On the dam. Some machinery, which had not been placed, was washed away. Th total damage was very slight This speaks well for the con- Structure. H. E. C. B.
