At a congre gational meeting held In the church yesterday morning immediately after the morning worship, a call was ex tended to Rev. Dr. C- M. Richards, of matrsvllle, to the pastorate of th Presbyterian church here. This Is the second call that has been made to Dr. Richards by this congregation. About a. year ago, almost as soon as the church became vacant by the resignation of Dr. Graham, who re moved to Lexington, Va., the congre gation with great unanimity and heartiness, askd Dr. Richards to De cerns his successor, but after due de liberation he declined for reasons that seemed to him at the time to be con vincing as te why he should decline. Now, after a year's waiting, this con gregation hHH turned again to Its first choice and yesterday united In a hearty and earnest request to the 8tatesille pastor to reconsider and see If this colleje town and tjvofold congregation does not offer a field of useful labor that he ought not longer to refuse to enter upon. There are good reasons for believing that nr. Rlen- ard" will give the matter a , careful study and It Is confidently felt that with nil the facts before him he will be nlow to refuse aecond time, de spite his attachment for his present charge and his people's devotion to him. The church records nhow that In recent years, and especially recent months. Dr. Richards rms been busy In declining Inviting offers. His salary here would be 1 1,800 and a manse.
