ULgttU anil Many Other. ChMeii.:.v'!..;; - The Observer ha from time to tint mentioned the -. Improvements that have been made on Tryon Street . Methodist church, a the work has congregation occupies It to-day for the first time under new conditions. It will be interesting reading to re view tha whole building, which has been so changed In this last work, to . gether jwith the work dona a few years ago, that this church has been put In the front as to room and con venience, for the work for which it was designed. JJke all similar undertakings, where and wort several opinions as to the ifcest thing to do, but after mature de-j .iiDcrsuva ins cunimiuvc awiucu wi soend .' the money ou the present structure In preference to a new house' ' on other ground, or the same ground. The idea that once prevailed in some quarters that It was best to sell out close-in church property and move to the residence sections, has been ex-i ploded in the best circles of Method . iso. and the present idea is to hold j .va to valuable up-town property for several' reasons, one of the principal j reasons being that people will go to j church In the same sections that they , go to business. It seems, better than If la the residence section. The . exterior work consists of ten new opalescent glass windows for the front; this glass is the best maae ana i lakes the. nl&re of those' that were there, i materially changing the ap pearance on the window lines: and the building of a series of arches, three, over the front entrance and the covering of the open way, under which has heen plaoed a light that Illuminates the way as few entrances in the city are Ugh ted, and the three arches make the front look like a dlt ferent buHding. Passing into the closed vestibule that formerly had opening only into the auditorium, one llnd that all changed. A pretty tiled floor has been laid and open archways cut Into, the side Walls to the ante rooms-en either side, which formerly were entered from the open vestibule la the very front. The tile work also extends Into theae rooms to the top of the steps that formerly led down to the . old basement Sunday school room no w the kitchen and dining room tor occasions social, where the good ladies serve refreshments as the occasion demands. From this vestibule you enter the tnaln rhureh auditorium, through the doors as formerly, and It Is In her that the real beauty of the work dona shows- All the woodwork has been painted and changed as If other work, the color being a cool-looking old Ivory,. very pleasing to the eye, a color that will wear and not tire. This color takes all save the pews and the pulpit and altar rail. CEILING ANif WALLS. The telling is In panels of light cream with .mosaic ornaments of gold. carried out la Gothic traceries to con-i form with the architecture. The wans were treated In the same style, the aides being in rose with darker traceries, making a two-tone effect. The ornament of old gold, used In tne big arch and done In fresco, over the organ, with Corinthian columns and capitals, makes a most pleasing har- . tnony of color. , Over the rear gallery Is a larger titan life sis, mural painting of : "Christ and the Samaritan Woman at the Well." This is a creditable pleee of work a copy of one of Hoff mann' most famous paintings and the technique, of the same school. Is very Impressive. This picture Is considered very clever and a faithful conception of the Savior. It adds much to the looks of the church. Nothing helps a church's brightness no much as good light, and In thin the committee has exceeded its own expectations. Mr. O. F. Asbury did the work, and his arrangement of the ywA nf Kh&ilett lizhtx aver the orran. as mellow as the moon, and the rows I..- t . I. V.-.. n...-V..... A n I VI llUU IU luo 'its uvciirw, AMU around the celling of the gallery leave ttot a single dark corner in the whole auditorium; all of the lights are so circuited as to cut in and out as many or as few as needed. The most pow erful lights are in the centre of the arches, and Mr. Asbury says they alone will light the building. In short, it would be hard to make a place lighter and not hurt the eye, m this Is so shaded that there is the absence of all glare. The decorations Inside have the effect of making the old windows look very much brighter than they former ly appeared, and, or course, they cheer the whole building. ' . The decorative work waa dona by the Reuben Rink Decorative Com r-any, of Keruersvllle. which has in the last thirty years earned quite reputation for doing fine church, hall and residence decorative work. Its territory covers several States. The minting referred to in another part of this was done by this company's artist. Mr. Caesar Milch, a German by birth, who has been with them fejr more than fifteen years, doing the fine pictorial and ahaded scroll work. It will not be amiss to say that the fine pictures high over the stage in the Academy of M uaic here were done eeveral year ago by the same person. Many have admired it without know ing that it was done by North Carolinians,-. ; MAJfT WORKED FOB CARPET. But of all the work 1a the church there IS nothing that adds so mach to Its beauty and comfort as the new carpet; an elegant akade of green, which shows to perfection under the new color of the Interior. This part and the new pulpit and chairs coma through the Church Improvement So ciety, of which lira, C. W. Hunt Is president. It Is the result of long and continued work on the part of the working ladies of the congregation, sr. d there are a hondred that could te named who, have tolled for this very ' thing; ; soma at. tha machine, soma at the cook at Oe, soma la al most every honoraoie way to make extra money and do this work' with their own hnOM.Y4? ri-i ;.s-.rfev ,a Tryon Street congregation hat been very prosperous under. the pastorate of Rev. Hugh K. Boyer, the member ship having grown steadily every year till there are jover Sat 'members on the1 roll; and while mentioning this part of tha work It would be. proper to tell what a complete thurch there Is on the corner of Sixth and Tryon. The auditorium has .been described, but la the rear there is as ' complete a Sunday school room as there Is In the Staje, which faces on Sixth street, the two main entrances being on that side. This building has": auditorium and gaJJery, and opening from these two are rooms .for each class in the school, all well ventilated and light ed and separate front ,ny other ctasa With this splendid equipment Super intendent E. A. Cole is doing a fine work there, the result of which, is shown in the increased average at tendance, and the general make-up of the school. -'Little, was said In the papers at the time Dr. T. F. Marr, then pastor, was building this annex to the church and some, high up, criticised the work, but thework was even better than its friends expected, and the, good results are seen and felt ftvery week that passes. The building of this Sunday school room made it easy to get a' place for having socials, a very necessary thing In " church work, the old Sunday school room in' the base ment being fitted up with a stove and dining room, and the Baraca room and the primary room ' making fine parlors for the reception of guest. Many Charlotte people, outside of the membership, have enjoyed evenings there. The committee, composed of Messrs. D. H. Anderson, chairman; Dr. H. F. Ray. B. D. Heath and W. W. Hagood. worked In conjunction with the pastor. Rev. H. K. Boyer, In having this work completed. The friends and the public are in vited there to-day or any other time to see the work or to worship.
