Spring Hop, Dec 1C In the olden time It WM customary In soma coun try communities to put MP turkeys, ' and markamen in the neighborhood would ahoot for them. There would also be gander pulling, an old gander being hung up by the feet, ills neck greased and the young fellows would pay a fee for the privilege of palling Ills head . off. Turkeys and ganders, .via these recent year, have toeen ad vanced so In price that one rarely . dears of these old-fashioned shooting and pui lings; but th new generation has sprung other things as Interesting -' and possessing the same old elements , of chance, without the necessary dls- Slay of skill to, fee winners. Spring ope baa grown to be somewhat of a city in Its short ure of a score of years, yet a raffling contest tlll at tract Interest, especially when prom inent citizens are Interested. This was the case yesterday afternoon, when Captain Bill, who is the popular conductor on this branch of the At lantic Coast line, aided by a number ml Spring Hop citizens, pulled off a raffle for an up-to-date hammerles shotgun. Th plan was the same as Is practiced at 'other places, hut the prominence of the contestant made the affair one of the leading event of th week. Those especially Interested were: Supt. T. H. The ' gun was won by Mr. James Wheeleas, of the Southside pharmacy. HooreevUle Graded School Has Arbor Day. Special to The Observer. Mooresvllle, Dec. 17. Prise to Beat Fiction Wrtters Davidson, t ' Correspondence of The Observer, Davidson, Dec It. This morning at the close of the chapel service presentation . of three prlxea was made by Dr. Martin; acting for th committee, to the young men who had contributed the best articles of fiction to the magazine during the fall term. These were: 85 to J. B. White, '10; $8 to T. A. Beckett. '12 to A. Leaxar, '11. Dr. Martin had everybody badly fooled in his presen tatlon speech, leading the audience to suppose for some minutes that the men he was calling forward were about to be dismissed for some sud denly discovered -ugly conduct that warranted a public exposure and de nunciation. The magaaine management has done wisely In this offering of prlxea. Another lot is offered for' contrlbu tions In the spring, the contest being limited to about the middle of March as the latest date at which articles can be submitted. W9i r. - - , . . .
