CHAKLOTTiil DAILY OBSEKVEK, JAUAK 5, lyot. Fpancial and Commercial COTTOX MARRKT. New York, Jan. 4. The cotton market reacted After an early advance and ruled quiet during the afternoon with the close Meady, net unchanged to i points lower. Sales for the day were estimated at 200, U00 bales. The market opened steady at an ad vance of 4 to 8 points and during the early session sold ( to 10 points net high er In response to higher cables, larger Kngllsh spot sales, reports of a better business In Manchester; talk of an in creased demand from New England spin ner and early reports from the South of (tady Interior holding. There was a, good deal of realising at the advance, however, and as there seem ed to be very little broadening of demand prices soon developed a reactionary ten drncy which' was probably promoted by bearish week-end flguras and large esti mates for to-morrow's receipts at lead InR polnta. The lowest level of the day a as reached In the late trading and the c ose was within a point or two of the bottom. A ooupte of private ginning reports is sued during the day each pointed to about 12,430,000 bales ginned to January 1st, and while this reflected a eonnlder able falling off as compared with Hie pre vious period the figures seemed fully as large., as expected. Business was fairly active on the early advance, but the market was dull on the decline and the steadiness of the Southern spot markets Imparted a steady undertone at the close. The census report is due at the opening on Saturday morning. Receipts at the ports to-day S0.120 bales against 49.K last week and 50.306 Inst year. For the week IH0.000 bales against o.Ta last week and 303.945 last year. To day's receipts at New Orleans 14.017 bales against 12.000 last year .and. at Houston 7,441 bales against 11. sW last year. STOCK MARKET. . New Tork. Jan. 4.-JA very heavy spec ulation miscarried by the loss of the Consolidated iJaa suit to. overthrow the New York Ktate law limiting the charge allowed to be made for Illuminating gas In New York City to M cents a thousand feet. The abrupt announcement that the i mpany had lost its suit threw the hold ers of the( stock Into a panic and an al most perpendicular drop of W4 points by intervals as much as 5 points the consequence. 8o violent a movement even In a single stock could not he expected to leave tho general market unaffected by sympathy. The movement through out the morning had been feverish and unsettled, marked by spasmodlo advanoes In selected stocks accompanied by heavy realising under cover of the sustaining Influence of these advances.
