HARASSING THE RAILROADS, Many Bills Affecting TUeae Corpora tions Introduced In South Carolina Iiglslattire Mileage Books May Be Vllthiran Educational Commit tee yresrling With Compulsory Bill. Observer Bureau. 1230 Berkeley Building, Columbia, 8. C Jan. Within the laet forty-eight hours a number of blllr -ffectlng the rail roads have been introduced In the South Carolina Aasembly. and the representatives of the roada are here righting good and hard for the com panies they represent. The greater part of the proposed legislation is of" a kdnd tMt the railroad men say the. Legislature ought to have no Interest in,' affairs that can be better managed as between the roads and their em ployes. Among tha meaaures proposed, fair samples of the whole, are bills to require payments to employes twice a month, to require five men on each train as a crew, to require shops in every State, to regulate the mileage charges, to require electric head lights. The railroad men insist that If these things ere good, if they saved life or property, they would naturally have taken them up with out compulsion; that all of these de- ' tails of managing a railroad ought to he lett to the commission appointed for that purpose, a bod of men that ! might Investigate and ai t intelllgent 1. while It is Impossible for the mem i bers of the le gislature to go right in a matter requiring accurate knowl edge of many facts which they are not in a position to obtain, even If they had months instead of minutes to devote to the consideration. 1 It Is suggested that the tight that Is being made to secure a change In ! the malter of the mileage books will result In their being withdrawn, so that everv man who wants to travel Mill have to pay i ash for a ticket, i 'I'h. railroad men insist that they urtf not treated Mith Justice by the mem bers ol the i; iieral Asaemhlv, because ! nhencwr a measure affecting them is i a.-ked for the disposition of the mer ' age man i- to vote fur it unless ho . an l.e shown conclusive reasons why he ulioiihl net The educational committee Is wrestling with the compulsory -i'du-' cation laws and one will probably be drafted Tioin the bills pre-nted nliuh will not be too drastic and vet will reach the cases desired. Laurant, the magician, and his company will be seen at the Academy of Music to-night. Laurant is said to be the most successful magician now appearing before tha American public. He performs stunts that are perfectly marvelous, so much so that he has been given the title of "The .Man of Many Mysteries." One of his stunts la called "MHglc of the orient." It is during this part Of the performance the audience ia en abled to witness soroesof the feats of the Hindoo fakirs that have remain ed a mystery for ages. This Is one of the most enchanting parts of the performance and Is entirely original with Mr. Laurant. The apparatus and paraphernalia that Mr. Laurant carries with him to present his performance is of the finest and In addition to these elegant settings he carries all of his own cur tains, draperies and hangings, which I etng of a beautiful red color, give the stage the appearance of a perfect magician's palace. MADAM EMMA CALVE. The advance sale of tickets for Madam Emma Cnlve's engagement at the Academy of Music, Friday night, has been most remar ka-ble. and It Is more than probable that every seat In the house will be sold that might. Mine. Calves song recitals mean a gieat deal more to knowing music lovers than one at first would ' Imagine. It is readily understood that only the gems of the dlfflerent operas are se lected for song recitals, thereby elim inating the necessity of sitting through a long and tlnesome, and i.ddlv enough, generally, uninterest ing performance of a grand opera just to hear the "gem of the opera." Mine Calve has always been happy in her selections of the number) on lo r programme; she usually takes only those that appeal strongly to the mu s.cal ear anil, of course, such num bers generally appeal to the unedu cnted ear, becaAise, as some one haa said. "Music Is the original universal language." and Is readily understood In its nakedness the same as when clothed In Celestial raiment. Mine Calve s method is delicate and finished and her singing 1s always Im bued with that peculiar Are and qual ity that first electrk-fVed metropoli tans when they listened to her sing ing of Carmen" on that eventful night ten years ago. The method of the great Calve's has not chHnged one lota since New York first heard her ravlshlnib- beau tilui voice, though the quality Is more mellow and sympathetic and conse quently more appealing In Its higher register Tn this season's repertory of songs she Is heard to the best ad vantage yet In her career upon the stage Malaria Causes I.ohu of A)jsHltr. For grown people and children 50c. tsie Csio tJe Catarrh is a blood disease which causes a general inflammation of tha inner linings or mucous membranes of the body. The diseasing of these delicate surfaces and tissues produces all the well known symptoms of tha trouble, such a9 ringing noises in the head and ears, tight, stuffy feeling in the nose, pa!n above the eyes, irritation of the throat, sometimes slight fever, and a general feeling of weakness and ill health. Even the lungs become affected by the continual passage of impure blood through them, and there is danger of consumption if the disease is allowed to remainMn the system. S. S. S. cures Catarrh because it purifies the blood. It goes into the circulation and removes every particle of the catarrhal matter, making this vital fluid pure, rich and healthy. Then the inflamed membranes begin to heal, every symptom disappears, the constitution is built up and health restored. S. S. S. rids the system of catarrh by attacking the trouble at its head and entirely removing the cause from the blood, thus making a perma nent and lasting cure. S. S. S. is made entirely from health-giving roots, herbs and barks, and for this reason is an especially safeand desirable medicine. Book on Catarrh and any medical advice free to all who write.
